Here's my theory on Hurley's good luck followed by back luck problem which has plagued him.
It's a war between Jacob and Smokee.
When Hurley plays the numbers on the Lotto, Jacob rigs it for him to win. But then Smokke retaliates by doing something bad around Hurley. Then Jabob does something good. Smokee does something bad. Jacob blesses. Smokee curses.
For some reason, Hurley is a victim or pawn of this war between the two.

SO....how does that explain Hurley incredibely good luck in the FS? GOing with your train of thought.....it's actually Jacob who has caused all of this good luck for Hurley, so does that mean that Jacob is STILL causing all his Good Luck? Why?
I don't think Smokey has any power off-island. He's stuck on that island, bottled up in all respects. If he did have power beyond the soil where he stands, he could counteract any work Jacob did to attract people to the island. For instance, influence people on the Black Rock to start fighting each other to cause a mutiny, or stir up waves to push the ship away from the island.

So....if that's the case, and Smokey can't influence anything off the Island-- How can Smokey do bad things around Hurley when Jacob does good things?
That doesn't even make any sence.
