Couple of things. Jack mentions he took flying lessons. has this been shown in a flashback and could it be important? also when they are on the way to the cockpit why does it show vincent watching jack, kate and charlie? is it the monster following them?

Des, I thought the same thing about Vincent, he seemed to be able to smell out smokie. As far as jack and the flying lessons, I thought that just made it more believable that he would know about the radio. My biggest q of that epi was why did smokie or whatever go seemingly only for the pilot?

The flying lessons were never shown or referred to after that scene for the rest of the show. I don't know if it will. And that was really Vincent there, not the monster.

when jack says "it wasn't for me" talking about flying lessons it just seemed like there was more to the story. why did the monster cause so much blood when it killed the pilot? i dont remember it killing eko in such a bloody way.

I agree with you. For a long time i hoped/thought that it would be in a flashback, but with all this season 4-fast pace stuff going on, i'm starting to doubt it. I've also thought about the blood thing. I guess i can kill in as many different ways as it wants. Think about it, it's smoke... it can take on a few forms.

That's another good point that I wondered about. Initially I thought some sorta animal like a bear with all the blood, but they were too high. Didn't ecko also get roughed up and bloodied pretty bad?

I dont remember a huge amount of blood like the pilot had coming out of him. The pilot never seemed surprised when jack said at least 48 survived. there's gotta be more to his story especially since frank said he knew him

I agree Des, This is what drives you nuts about the show. I hope we Get a Frank flash soon.

Let's compare the two.
Seth's(the pilot) death:
-Yanked right out the right side of the cockpit.
-SUDDEN burst of blood all over the left cockpit window.
-Messed up carcuss found in the tree branches COVERED with blood.
Eko's death:
-Slamed into a tree multiple times, then ending blow onto the ground.
-Not an instant death, Locke was able to talk to him before he died.
-Little to no blood.
Good thing i memorized the entire show!

Warrior, both pretty gruesome, so prob the same monster. We keep on talking about smokie being the monster, but we really have no proof yet. there could be another one.

Exactly! remember Episode 3.05-The cost of living (Eko's death episode). The scene when Locke asked Eko what he saw while they are talking near the nigerian plane. Eko doesn't answer and Locke says "I saw a bright light" and Eko says "That is not what i saw." Locke was referring to episode 1.04 "Walkabout" when he saw it. Ever since that scene iv'e beleived there was a good and bad monster on the island.

The pilot was probably working for Ben. That's why the Lawnmower Man didn't have a chance to fly Oceanic Flight 815. How else would you explain the pilots behavior? I he kept flying the plane according to Ben's coordinates and just waited for Desmond to forget to push the button, thereby bringing a surgeon to Ben.

Joe, you can't base anything on the 5 minutes of his behavior that we saw, because he had a concussion, people act a little differently when their plane crashes as well.
The plane thing doeesn't make any sense either, because Seth had no way of knowing if there would be a surgeon on the flight or if the button would happen to not be pushed. I think Ben wouldve thought of a better plan then that, being the genius he is.

The reason there was so much blood when the pilot died is that it was the pilot. No one had any idea what was going on, and the entire production team's number 1 concern is getting the show renewed. Having the pilot get killed in a bloody mess was more attention-grabbing and sensational than having the pilot simply disappear out of the cockpit. That just wouldn't have made sense in the context. Also, "smokie" seems to be able to do whatever he wants, and the fact that he can have such different reactions to Eko and Locke prove that he can also kill people in different ways, perhaps depending on the nature of their characters.

The producers have said at some points thatth epilot death seen was orignaly going to be a Jack death seen. They never actualy changed the seen just the chr based on it. Since both chrs had a white shirt on from a distance as teh shot was shown. atthat distance you couldn't realy tell it was supose to be Jack. Perhaps Jack's death was supose to be more grusum. So they just left itthat way. Because at that point in time we had no clue what Smokie was, about, etc. So we wouldn'ttake notice to how the death seen was untill later.
Another thing I want to add about Smokie,is that the producers have hinted that we have only seen part of the "monster" and they put monster in quotations. As if perhaps Smokie isn't a monster after all.

I hate to be the one who always says "but the writers said so!" but I swear I remember reading an interview with the writers where they said that it was definately the smoke monster who killed the pilot in the Pilot (that's confusing, isn't it?). Can anyone confirm/deny this?

It has to have been the smoke monster. i also thought it was confirmed by the writers.

Remember Boone's dream when Locke gave him the stuff for his head? The monster bloodied up Shannon right much.

Yeah, if the smoke monster can take human form and know people's darkest secrets than it can choose between a clean or messy kill too!

yeah, i dont think it has many rules with regards to how it kills lol!
one day it wants to beat the crap out of someone, next day it wants to eviscerate!
