View Full Version : The orange peel in Locke's mouth...

Does anybody know if Terry O'Quinn came up with the idea to have an orange peel show in his mouth when he smiled at Kate?

I think it's a brilliant effect. I mean here you have a severely tragic incident, a crash landing of a jet liner that kills hundreds, leaving a mere 70+ as survivors. Everybody is a mess. Of course, John Locke discovers that he can walk again and so he's thrilled... it kind of overshadows the horror of the situation.

Had John smiled at Kate without anything in his mouth, the effect would have been very different. With the orange peel showing, it's very comical. And when Kate sees it, it's almost like she is disgusted, like "this guy is an insensitive jerk, clowning around at a time like this." And yet, it's kind of a double irony... he's not intentionally trying to be silly. He is caught up in this peculiar juxtaposition.

The other thing is that scratch running down across his eye. It almost looks like the kind of accent you'd see on a marionette (puppet). So in essence, he is not what he appears to be. The picture is complete with another scratch added (using Photoshop):

Anyway, I'm wondering what other people thought of when they saw him beaming that orange smile...

I have actually always thought that scene with the orange peel was rather creepy not funny. *shrugs*

I agree with notsolost42.

I think this was one of the creepiest moments in LOST. Now, knowing what I know, when I go back and watch this scene again I find it to be even more creepy!

Yea that scene just kind of added to the mystery of who JL really was. I liked it and thought it was a great way to present Locke

He's one creepy son of a beach in that scene...

Obviously, it's meant to be out-of-place. It's drawing attention to this character and something being not quite right. For me, it signifies that Locke is one cool mofo. ;)

I agree, it is creepy, now that I've watched it once more. :) But not so much in a "run like hell" kind of way... more like "uh, what's up with this dude?"

;)

It definitely set a tone for Locke. Even though we had a few periods where most everyone thought Locke was the "one to follow", there was always something a bit off with him. When he got obsessed with the hatch, that really kicked it up a notch.

Funny that you mention this and that you know how to use photoshop.
Each time I see locke on a picture with that kind of scar on his face or in an episode..the idea pops up "There we have Pierrot once more"....

The scar is a reference to the Egyptian God Horace

I always thought he'd be a potential really bad guy or some strange good guy to follow, but twisted. That moment sort of set that feeling up for me.

+When I first saw it. I thought good god what a crazy "Son of a beech".
But knowing what I do now. You see a man of faith. Who knew that this accident was not an accident. But a second chance. Im that way. I don't stress over things no matter how deer or serious the situation is. I keep my faith and take it as this is what is spose to be happening and it wouldn't happen to me if I couldn't get threw it.

The first time I saw that scene it shocked me. It is was just freakish to me.

A couple weeks ago, one of my daughter's was watching with me. She has never seen LOST before, poor soul. Anyway, when Locke's orange-peeled mouth grinned into the camera, she jolted in her chair and said, "What the HELL??"

I still am not sure what the significance of the scene was. Comic relief, or another scare tactic? It was nightmarish to me.

I still think John was trying to lighten up the moment. Kate was not in good shape right then and it was just an immidiate thought at the moment.
John was really John back then and he was a genuinely good guy.
