Hello folks! First time poster here... long time fan. Just wanted to chime in and make sure everyone took notice of the book Ben was reading. It's a novel called "Vulcan's Hammer" and was written by Philip K. Dick in 1960. You can get some great information on it here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulcan's_Hammer) at Wikipedia.

I'll comment more on this after the episode is over... but I wanted to get everyones' heads brewing as to how this relates to the plot.
Here's to making some great new Lost friends!

Ok, so on to my explanation of how "Vulcan's Hammer" serves as an allegory to the plot, and may be an indication of things to come.
"Vulcan's Hammer" is about a post-apocalyptic world where all aspects of life are controlled by a one-world government. In order to maintain a strict set of standards, all questions of morality and right and wrong are submitted to the ruling voice of the people. This voice is the Vulcan 3 supercomputer. Vulcan 3 is sentient and serves as an impartial judge in all things. It's ingrained its way into every aspect of life and is secretly controlling the events of mankind. Yet, a rebellion, called the Healers, is slowing brewing and means to overthrow the government and its computer. Caught in the middle of all this drama is a head governmental director by the name of William Barris. He struggles to maintain the balance between man and machine, not knowing that multiple fronts are working against him and each other.
Jason Dills is the man that submits all questions of humanity to Vulcan 3, but whom secretly is still loyal to the previous (and also sentient) Vulcan 2 computer system. Vulcan 2 helped establish the very rebellion that is brewing against Vulcan 3 because it didn't want to be superceded by its upgrade.
Unbeknown to all is the fact that Vulcan 3 has caught on to what's secretly going on and has developed means to destroy all that oppose him.
Eventually, Dills and Barris learn of one another and realize that they must work together to stop Vulcan 3 and save humanity and those they care about the most. They succeed in doing so, but Dills pays the ultimate price and is killed in the process.
It's very easy to see the clear parallels to the Lost plot. The DHARMA Initiative could be replaced by the Unity Government. We know that there have been other DHARMA locations that existed before the one on the island. Perhaps the old location could serve as Vulcan 2 and the island location is Vulcan 3. I see a clear relation between Dills/Barris and perhaps Jack/Locke. Please, everyone discuss this and bounce it around. I'm sure there are points I haven't ironed out correctly. I'd love to hear what everyone thinks!

After reading one of the other threads about "The Whispering Again (http://www.lost.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1540)," a thought struck me as pertaining to the Vulcan's Hammer concept.
What if the island and the computer that controls it is indeed alive? What if Goodwin's Wife wasn't really Goodwin's wife, but a creation of the island to further its own exploits? What if the one pulling the strings isn't anyone on the island?
What if the one pulling the strings is the island?

It was an interesting episode for sure. Some important things were brought to light, most notably that Widmore is the one who sent to boat...but it was unfairly preceded by one of the best episodes yet, and frustratingly cut into what we really want to see...whats going on on the boat.
Now we have to wait another week to find out whats happening with Des and the gang, and find out whos big black fro we saw at the end of next weeks preview (like we all dont know already)

Exactly... I've been a long proponent that the island itself, or at least its infrastructure, was alive. I'm think at this point that the island is manipulating everyone in a way that best serves its interests. It's certainly not far-fetched at this point to believe that the island has made people "suddenly appear" and deliver a message or give one of the survivors a clue. For that matter, if the island is alive and creating visions... could some of the people we see actually be real at all?

The Island is an entity, that is becoming more evident, possibly populated
with the souls that have lost their lives there. But controlled by Jacob and
run by Ben.
