My theory is that fLocke doesn't want to leave the island at all. He wants to be the last person there. The game between Jacob and MIB is that the last man standing gets the island and all it's spoils, but neither can kill each other and there are rules regarding killing others. Pawns can be killed (i.e. dumb guys guarding the plane) but candidates (knights, rooks, queens) can't be directly killed. Sort of similar to the rules of chess if stretched a bit. Jacob continually brought people to the island to make it harder for MIB to be the last man, and MIB finally realized that since he can't kill Jacob, he'll get one of those pesky people that Jacob brought to the island to do it.
