View Full Version : Richard's age

I was watching Lost ... again! And the mystery of Richard's age (Black haired guy with Ben) came back to me. We all know he does'nt seem to age. But why?
It occured to me that: women can't have babies and people don't seem to die of disease (except Ben) or minor injuries (sometimes even major). So, I think that the island stops the aging process in individuals, to keep its own protector alive indefinitly. Since you can't populate the island except by having people drop by, the island protects its proctectors.
Now what Ben says makes more sense to me. I just have to figure the other mystery... why protect the island?

Honestly in my opinion I think the reason he hasn't aged to us is because they didn't want to use a different actor. They put long hair on him and make-up to make him look younger to us when they go back in time with Ben, but in present time they cut his hair real short. I don't think it has anything to do with him not aging, but ya never know with this show :)

Since Ben was about 10 years old the first time he meets Richard. Ben now looks about 40. We can safely assume that richard should now be about 50 years old. He SHOULD have grey hair, wrinkles or look at least a bit older than he looks now. So I think that there's something with him.

Kids are obviously going to age more visibly to everyone rather than the adults, I mean look at Walt. His voice has even changed but thats just because they are keeping all the same characters. Lost began 3 years ago so of course the teenagers and babies are going to look a lot different. I really don't think this is a case of the Others not aging, even if they did or didn't you wouldn't notice it in that small amount of time.

exactly what i've been saying. What abiout the fountain of youth idea? I don't nkow if it's been brought up before (heh, probably) but... that would be why people are trying to find it so bad, why scientists were there in the first place, and why the island has healing powers... an idea.

its been theorized that Richard Alpert arrived on the island on the Blackrock, which landed on the island around 1880. Either he is a spirit roaming the island, or he has become somehow immortal.
I personally think he did arrive on the Blackrock.

remember women can conceive on the island but they dont seem to survive past the second trimester.
richard not aging is definitely specific to the show - and i think its to do with the people who were on the island beore dharma, the others, rousseau and the survivors. it makes me think of close encounters - with the people who have gone missing over time eventually coming back and they havent aged, particularly the whol boat in the jungle/boat in the desert idea but i am not up for the alien side of it all.

I wrote a history of LOST that tells that Richard strangled his father, which joined with the island spirit to become what jacob is now. That's why Richard can't be the leader, Jacob won't let it happen.

I think you're right about the fountain of youth idea, parapadme. If you remember in, I believe it was "The Man Behind the Curtain," Ben says to Richard, "you remember what birthdays are, right Richard?" and all he does is smirk but not comment. This would suggest that it's been a long time since any of the others that were originally on the island had a birthday.

The history at Lostopoly (http://lost.activeboard.com/index.spark?forumID=116419&p=3&topicID=15257338) will fill you in.
Richard is the original Ben. When Richard strangled his father Ben had to intercede because the Jacob spirit wouldn't let Richard in anymore. Richard's father is Jacob, But he killed him.hence Ben's little joke that Locke had to kill Sawyer (the real sawyer).
Jacob landed on the island on the Black Rock. Richard was already born, and on the ship. But he can't have kids either.

Very good point! I've often thought about when he said that but wasn't sure what Ben was getting at. This idea isn't far off considering Time Travel has been brought up surrounding Lost.

Ok. Im glade you brought up Ben's mother. I don't think it's smokie. i think it was Jacob in the form of Ben's mother. Just as he became Christian in last week's episode. Jacob comes in the form of people they trust to guide them to the path he sees is either safest or is marks for a better life.
In the case with Ben's mother. Jacob was trying to show Ben to the hostiles. Ben being a boy who had potintual to put an end to this war between the Dharma and the Hostiles. What Jacob didn't want was how Ben whent about doing it. I don't think Jacob wanted Ben to kill them all. I belive Ben lost faith in Jacob and turned on him. Some how traping him and using his presence as the authority while he took control. Perhaps it was Smokie who prisoned Jacob and showed Ben how to do it and told Ben that to better his people the Hostiles he should anilate them all together since they whern't willing to repint hint when Smokie asked Eko to do the same and when Eko refused he killed him. What Smokie or Ben didn't count on is how Jacob would learn how to use an ability to talk without being heard and be seen when he wants to be seen. Where he is traped in the house. I don't think he is powerless in the house as demostrated in the show.
At the same time there was that one insident where Eko meet a dark Yemi. I belive this dark Yemie was Smokie. Like you said Smokie can morph into people and has shown he can obtain memories from them. I belive Smokie is the dark excunitner and judge where Jacob is the guide and aid.

regarding Richard's age:
I also first thought he didn't age , then started to think that the directors attempted to 'age' him as he did have long hair when we first saw him and now again I think he is ageless. I remembered this:
In one of the last episodes from season 3 when Ben is alone with Richard in the tent Ben says : "it's my birthday Richard, you do remember birthdays don't you?"
I think that the original hostiles do not age.

i think that archangel is correct in some matter, as for the tie between smokie and ben and jacob. to me i think that everyone is underestamating the power smokie has in the story line. most people think its just a securety system, but to me i think its a representation of the island so that it can recieve guests and deal with them likely. i dont think that it is completely superficial to the fact that smokie can change time and what not though.

I agree with you, thats exactly how I felt...that he doesn't seem to age because the writers didn't want to use a different actor but I did remember Ben saying that to him. Plus its true, wouldn't he be like 70 some now??? Yah just doesn't make sense....maybe when we see Rousseau's flash back this season we'll see some other Others like Tom or Mikhal that haven't aged as well.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but in the Orientation video of the Orchid, the man in the background who says "You look great, it takes away the shine", to the Asian guy, sounds a whole lot like Richard. Maybe that means he's some kind of clone who can't age. Or there's tons of him that were cloned.

I always wondered about Juliet's sub ride from Portland to the island.
Since she was out and Ethan doesn't seem groggy when he wakes her up, is he the same Ethan that she met with Richard when she took the sedative? Or is there one Ethan and Richard in Portland and another on the island?

Um, the Black Rock isnt a pirate ship, it is a slave ship from 1881 that left New Guinea for Africa to trade Gold for slaves, and after it left Africa, it went missing...
The ship was captained by Magnus Hanso, an ancestor of Alvar Hanso, who is the owner of The Hanso Foundation, which formed the DHARMA initiative. Hanso also has ties to Paik Industries and Widmore.

Claire's Baby and Rousseau's baby were conceived off the island, as is everyone else on the island, so they can age just like all the other people who happened upon the island. The people in question are babies conceived on the island, etc. Also, if we are going to get hung up on the age of Richard, then we need to get hung up on the age of John Locke and his father who do not seem to have any age difference at all. I believe that Lost's costume people did as good as they could, but probably couldn't change these people's looks significantly enough to really make Richard look young, or Locke's father look old. Also, forgive me if I'm wrong, but the only time kid-Ben sees what is purported to be a "young" richard is when he is freaking out in the woods looking for his mom? If that is the case, what about the idea that Richard may just be an apparition to Ben at that point, and that he is not actually on the island yet or something. Many people have seen apparitions when the person/thing wasn't really there. Kate's horse, Shannon seeing Walt, Locke seeing Walt, Jack seeing his dad...etc.

Whem Locke goes to join the others Ben tells him that he has to kill his father and when Locke can't do it Richard gives him a file assuming it's about Sawyer so that Sawyer would kill Locke dad for him if I remember correctly Richard says something alone the lines of some of us don't like the way things are run around here.
And another note about the birthday thing it was Ben's birthday when the purge happened. it could have been more of a threat then a question to Richard.
