so widmore wants to exploit the island. ben wants to protect it from exploitation and is willing to kill to do it. but what are his reasons for wanting to keep the island under his control? and then the survivors are trapped in the middle, some help ben, some help widmore, and maybe there's even a middleground there. i guess i'm just not really sure who, if anyone, we should be rooting for.

Ben explained it pretty well to John. He told him about the image of the Virgin Mary that apeared on a garage door, or some building, and 5,000 people showed up to look at it and if word got out that John was in a wheel chair and after the plane crash he was doing cart wheels on the island how many thousands do you think would show up here to see that. (And don't forget Rose had cancer befor the crash.)There is def something magical about the island

I think that Ben was bamboozleing Locke with that story. Ben knows that Locke does not want to leave the island and will do anything to stay, so far as much as letting Ben free again.

Who are the good guys?
The only answer I can come up with is: No one.

I think the only good guys are the losties. Everyone else appears to have a motive that is less than ethical.

The good guys are the Losties.....Ben used that line, but he's not good.
He just wants to protect the Island, and uses the "we are the good guys" facade.

I don't pretend to know which side is good or bad at this point, but I'm pretty confident that Jin is a good guy.

That 5,000 people story Ben told John insults my intelligence and I can't believe that John would fall for it. Has John's brain turned to mush? Hope not! If it's just Ben's way of crafting a reason to protect the island then I can believe that Ben would make up such a lousy lie. But, it was Ben who started John doubting the computer button pushing thing.I used to tell my students something I learned in a discipline seminar given by Hanoch McCarty. That when someone is messing with you it's like throwing you a rope. Don't grab it whatever you do because then they have got You hanging on to the other end. They'll take you wherever they want to go! don't grab the rope, John!!!

Ben gave the "exploitation of the island" speach to the right person (John). But, it also did make a lot of sense to me. I had never thought of it that way. That being said, I believe we still have a lot of stuff to learn about the island and Ben and their story.

As for who are the good guys? I don't think Ben is one of the good guys. But I do think it depends on your perspective. Locke seems to be looking at Ben as a good guy b/c he doesn't want to leave the island. Juliet clearly doesn't think of Ben as one of the good guys at all. So, it just depends. It seems obvious to me that the survivors are innocent victems that have gotten caught up in something so huge that we can't even begin to guess how it will end up.

the reasonable question for John was not "who's your spy on the boat" but "why do you want to stop widmore that badly"

Too true, Ben knows how to push those buttons!

I'm not sure who's "good" and who's "bad" on this show. Almost everyone has done something to make them bad. But I believe Ben all and all is bad(or just crazy). Also I think Widmore is the ultimate bad guy who's trying to exploit the island. But I wonder if the black smoke is somehow involved with judging who's good and who's bad.

I think the point of this episode was to remind viewers who is a bad guy and who is a good guy. Here's what I came away with:
Ben - bad guy. Wants to 'protect the island' at all costs, even if it means killing people, including the Losties.
Freighties - good guys in that they want to stop Ben
Widmore - bad guy in Ben's eyes, but probably neutral in terms of the Losties. I don't see him being the economist or on Ben's list of guys for Sayid to clip.
