Can someone please explain to me how the rules work. Jacob and MIB can not kill eachother , yet we just saw Jacob kill MIB in this episode. They didn't explain the rules, the loopholes, anything at all. Who made the rules.

I agree. I read a spoiler a while back that origin of the rules were explained in this episode. They weren't, it was just alluded to in that discussion over Boy in Black's game but nothing else....

This is what I think. The "mother" told them that she made it so they can't hurt one another.
As far as the rules. When the boys were playing the game on the beach, Jacob questions the rules. The little MiB states that it was his game and he makes the rules and one day Jacob can make the rules.
I am guessing that the game Jacob makes is protecting the island and he made the rules.
As far as Jacob killing MiB, not sure, we know he threw him in the light, but what killed him? Was it the black smoke that killed him?
I am starting to think, much like Locke did, that the rules are sort of made up as they went along. I don't think these rules actually exist sometimes.

Well if he was still alive before he hit the light then technically he didn't kill him, just condemed him to a "fate worse that death"..

I think he may have knocked him out in the water and then pushed his body into the light.

If these rules are made up, I could be the writer for the freakin show. They can do whatever they want and it just doesn't matter. Its just really upsetting. Ben couldnt kill wildmore 3 seasons ago and that never got explained. Mib was alive when jacob through him in and he was dead when he was out of the light. theres no question jacob killed mib. Again, none if it makes any sense.

Does the kid who Richard and James saw factor into this? Whoever he is/was, he knows the rules. How does he know? He reminded FLocke about the rules earlier this season.
Just like Sam Toomey said, the rules weren't fully laid out for us to clearly understand in this episode. They were discussed but not explained.

Per the writers the rules are not going to be laid out for us.This episode was there way to give us an understanding of the rules of Jacobs game. What I don't get is why MIB doesn't say screw you and your rules???

Yeah, rules were made to be broken. :)
I guess MiB is in for a surprise when he kills all the candidates and finds out that he still can't leave the island, because he's the real protector of it... (pure conjecture)

The kid they saw was Jacob, correct?
I think Jacob made the rules up as part of his game. Exactly what they are and the full explaination of them, who knows.

I'm thinking that since Jacob has all these powers that were given to him, the rules are more like laws of nature. You can't defy gravity just by willing it to happen.
It's almost like Desmond said, I think, about being stuck in a snowglobe. It's not about abiding by the rules, it's just that there is no way to break them(except for a loophole).

it appears that the rules only apply to the black man, and jacob can do whatever he wants. jacob killed his brother, he bashed his head and then let him get flushed down the toilet.

He didn't kill him...Smokie hit his head on a rock when Jacob tossed him in that knocked him unconscious.
It was a provoked accident as a result of rage about the murder of his mom.

Perhaps somehow a crazy parallel to Desmond accidentaly killing Kelvin after being betrayed by him? Turned out pretty badly as well, with the plane crash. Kelvin wanted to leave, Desmond believed that there wasn't a way to leave. Maybe a bit of a stretch.

'no question jacob killed mib' - that's just not true at all. There are plenty of people on this board who don't think that. Just look in this very thread, and in others. I don't want to rehash things that have been discussed in other threads, but this is central to my belief that the rules weren't broken, so here's what I think: MiB was alive as he floated down the hole. The Light ripped his soul/consciousness out of his body, and he became the Smoke Thing. He never actually died. The body Jacob put in the cave next to Crazylady was just like a molted snakeskin that Smokey had shed.
The real support for this is that Smokey still acts like he used to be human. He no longer pretends that he's Locke, because he finished that plan and he now refers to Locke in the third person. But he still talks about 'my crazy mother' and 'Jacob took my body'. Why would he say that if he was a separate entity.
Of course, I could be wrong. But if I'm right, then no rules were broken. Everything's still consistent.

Jacob's brother only died in the physical sense. The physical body he had inhabited failed when it entered the Source, his spirit/soul/whatever passed into the Source and was reborn as the Smoke Monster. Going back to the game, Jacob's brother told him that one day Jacob would be able to make the rules. I believe that day was when Jacob through his brother into the source. Jacob has been making the rules for a very long time and his brother has been trying to find the "loopholes" in them to escape.
There is a difference between breaking a rule and working your way around it. Ask any lawyer.
