View Full Version : Was Harper an appearance from the monster?

I find it odd that Harper was able to find Juliet so easily, as well as disappear into nothingness so quickly. How would she know that Daniel and Charlotte were heading to the Tempest claiming she was there on Ben's behalf, seeing how Ben has been captive without any way of communicating with the others. Could she be an appearance of the monster and if so, does that mean Ben has a way of communicating with it?

My Monster detection ears went into OVERDRIVE during that scene - but probably because I missed the opening scene of the show with Juliet/Harper because I was getting the pizza from the dude outside (how convenient for him to show up in the first 2 minutes).
I think it's about 50/50. Harper was definitely alive no less than 3 months ago in Lost time - did she die since then? I have a fairly strong "gut feeling" that the Monster can only appear as dead people. If that's right, she would have had to die in those 3 months. But if it can appear as living people, then sure, I really do 100% believe that that was the Monster, and that he/it/whatever can get orders from Ben/Jacob/whoever else is in charge.

The producers have said that the flash-forwards are set in stone - they will not be affected by other events; they are happening as they will truly happen in the show.

there was definitely something strange about it - my initial reaction was that she was one of the islands apparition and fully expected to see a scene with her dying. obviously we never but that doesnt mean something hasnt happened since.
perhaps she is like walt? or perhaps it can be living people too - after all we are assuming that its walt using his ability to appear to people, what if its not?

I think it was her and nothing spiritual. Also, Ben has lot's of secret stuff at his place, so I would not discount his ability to communicate with the Others. Also, she said that "Ben is right where he wants to be".

So people can disappear into thin air? Naaaawwww....whenever you start to hear the whispers, that is a sure sign something is in the air; be it the smoke monster taking another form, or someONE or someTHING is being transported by order of Ben/Jacob, whatever.....
Something weird, though. Walt could NOT have been working for Ben, because his showing up undid what Ben attempted to do.
Ahhh, well....it's always interesting discussing these matters.:)

Exactly, Bunny. As soon as she disappeared into thin air with the whispers around, I turned to my boyfriend and said, "Well, I guess we're gonna see her die this episode because the Monster only appears as dead people."
I'm glad we're on the same wavelength - even if we weren't shown her death (assuming of course we're right).

I don't think Harper = Smoke monster and here's why:
If I were a smoke monster and could appear as anyone dead or alive, I sure wouldn't choose to come to Juliet as the wife of the dude I was boning. Especially if I wanted a favor from her. Just my opinion of course.

I don't think anyone's saying "Harper = Monster". What we're saying is that the Monster can take on human form, and that in this particular instant of time, he/it appeared as Harper. The Monster can (and has been) lots of people (well, not actually them, but corporeal copies of them).

Right, but what I'm getting at is... Why wouldn't it take on the form of someone with a better history with Juliet.

Some of us (including Bunnydixon) think the Monster can only appear as dead people. That eliminates a lot of possibilities already. It's also possible (and highly probable) that the Monster has to SEE the person it wants to imitate (which eliminates a lot of dead people who are now buried that the Monster never saw or had the chance to before their death). And clearly, it had to be someone that Juliet would believe COULD have contact with Ben - and this list must be exceedingly short.
I think it makes total sense for the Monster to appear as Harper given all of those requirements.

It appeared as that woman because it knew that Juliet had some sort of fear of her and did not really care for her. Maybe it was a scare tactic?

Hmm... Maybe even guilt? I'm starting to buy into this theory lol.

Oh I think it's the smoke monster when we saw Harper. And that was the perfect choice of person for Juliet to see.
She was doing the horizontal mambo with Harper's husband. Harper warned her that there would be consequences if and when Ben found out. Juliet keeps doing the nasty with him and he follows Ben's orders and ends up as a shishkebob thanks to Anna Lucea.
So, Juliet has LOTS of guilt over the death and who appears to her, but the dead boyfriend's wife... SHAME ALERT! Mr. Sulu, raise the GUILT! EMBARRASSMENT ALERT!
And it seems that the smoke monster feeds on the guilt of the person that it appears to in human form. Jack and his Dad, Hurley and his imaginary friend from the mental hospital, Mr. Eko and his brother...
ALSO, I think that the gray sand or dust or whatever it was that Locke found and was fiddling with when he was looking for Jacob's cabin is the smoke monster in a dormant form - as though it is asleep.

Decent possibility but I think only if Harper is dead.
Think about Yemi and Mr. Eko. Mr. Eko was faced with his 'sins' via his dead brother. Harper wasn't there to confront Juliet though so the parallel isn't quite there.

I just stated that in another thread - and I agree.

I think appreances are Jacob not the smoke monster. Jacob used her form like anyone else. Walt's appreances weren't because he was dead. Not sure why he was soaking wet when Shannon would see him, other then he would be coming from the raft after a swim, and he looks pretty freaky. But unsure why Jacob would want to keep Daniel and Charolotte from clearing the gas.
