We know the final episode of Season 3 is the future further out than the flashforwards seen in ep. 1 of Season 4. Jack is just starting to drink, adding vodka to his orange juice and is not a drunk. He also tells Hurley he is "thinking of growing a beard" which in the final episode of season 3 he already had.
I don't know what is going to happen on the island for the rest of this season, but at some point, it is clear that six survivors (the Oceanic 6) will leave the island, but apparently the rest decide to stay and want the island to remain a secret since the man visiting Hurley at the mental hospital is trying to find out if "the rest are still alive" and Jack was checking on him to make sure he didn't tell.
We know from Ben that the island is under attack and he has done everything possible, including manipulating his own people, to insure the island was not found. We also have been given hints all along that the island kind of drew certain people to it and that when the Oceanic 6 left, they had not accomplished what the island needed them to do.
One thing that people seem to be glossing over that I think it a critical clue is in the final episode of Season 3 when Jack says "Get my father down here and if he isn't as drunk as I am, you can fire me".
What if Jacks father never actually died, but it was a way for the island to draw Jack to itself? Jack found his fathers coffin empty and we have seen lighted screenshots of the figure in the rocking chair at Jacobs Cabin looking like Jacks father. I believe this is not really Christian Shephard, but a form the island takes, similar to how it takes Boone, Yemi and Walts form around others.
So for whatever reason, six survivors (we know Hurley, Jack and Kate for sure) leave the island, but over time they begin feeling themselves drawn back to it.
The island in the form of Charlie is trying to get him to get the others to return to the island saying "They (the ones on the island) need you". Jack becomes a drunk and attempts suicide. The zoomed in pictures of the obituary Jack is so upset about leads us to believe the person it is about committed suicide.
I think by the end of the season, we will see who left the island and why, but also in the flash forwards, we will see those who left trying to return.
BTW, I believe that the person Kate was worried "would miss her" in season 3s final episode flash forward will be her child from Sawyer. Remember the Others wanted her when they were kidnapping the pregnant women and it has never been confirmed or denied that she is indeed pregnant.
NOTHING IS EVER SAID OR ALLUDED TO ON LOST UNLESS IT HAS MEANING.
