I was just thinking about this some. A huge part of LOST is whether a lot of this is supposed to be fate or coincidence. It's been said by Locke that they're all there for a reason. But the writers have said that 815 crashed because Desmond didn't push the button. So does this mean this is all coincidence or still fate is the factor? Post any ideas

How do you make a distinction between fate and coincidence? One of the synonyms for "coincidence" is "fate."

I guess I should word it better. I mean more of destiny and free will. Were they all destined to crash on that island. Or was it just accidental. The writers have talked about "free will on a grand scale". Also I was thinking about does the universe course correct (Charlie supposed to die).

It seems reasonable to hypothesize that the balance between "fate" and "coincidence" has been altered by the people now manipulating the weird powers of teh island. You could perhaps frame the entire struggle as one between those who wish to control the future, and those who wiah the future to be uncharted. Perhaps the powermonger Widmore is trying to corner the market on time travel and thereby "control" the future? In another thread, someone mentioned that Sayid is working for Ben to serve his own purposes...so maybe Sayid is trying to prevent anyone from continuing to manipulate the islands' powers?
Thoughts?

I always looked at it like this...when someone asks me "are you happy with your life?" - I tell them that I wouldn't change a thing because every experience I had in my life led me to where I am now. Destiny I think. Fate too. Coincidence is someone trying to rationalize the two.

I think for LOST there may be a mix of destiny and free will. I think there's a possibilty also for someone to change the future (such as Desmond).

Not sure i can reflect on the overarching blend that you propose, but i do think that being happy where you are is a rare quality. Most people are trying to move to a different place in their life...it's the human condition.

Do you mean in real life or are you talking about the show?

And there are those that attempt to deceive the characters into believing otherwise...like the old woman. Probably a plant from Widmore.

Destiny plays a big part...coincidences...prob not many...everyone is interconnected somehow....and i never thought about her being a plant by widmore but i would not doubt it....we can never underestimate him....including using penny to get what he needs!!

I wonder if Widmore can travel in time. And like you said put that women there because maybe he knew Desmond would at the ring shop. Plus he didn't want Des marrying Penny

Both. But being that this is a LOST site...probably better to stick to the show. Locke being the prime mover of that thinking...he's found a better place than the life he left before the crash...sawyer too.

Is there any evidence out there to shoot down the theory that Widmore and Ben are vying for control of the island's powers? The motives are different, but the struggle is the same. They both want control. And the events of the crash have caused a serious rift in that balance (like 2 superpowers). Now we've got our protagonists blindly struggling against vast powers aligned against them. Ultimately, the power of the unpredictable (how the losties behave) may prove too powerful against the powers of those that attempt to control the future.
Something like that.

Yeah, personally I believe Widmore is a very powerful person. Maybe not with special abilities, but he has a lot of money meaning he has a lot of power and can control many things. I think he's the ultimate bad guy against the island and the Losties.
