well since daniel and his cohorts are from the boat and the boat is Mr. Widmore's it is possible that the map could be from an early mapping from the Black Rock Ledger that Mr. Widmore purchased in 1996. I also think this is how Mr. Widmore knows so much about the Island.

i somewhat doubt it is from the ledger since one would think that the map would be a little more accurate by now if someone goes to the trouble of mapping out where the dharma station is... one couldn't just slap that down on an old map to guess where it is, someone must have been on the island and made this map during or after DHARMA's time on the island...i can't really think of anyone off the top of my head that fits into that framework...although, Widmore very well could have had someone break into the University of Michigan to find some information about the DHARMA intitiative....
and on second thought... perhaps Ben's man on the tape that gets caught by Mr. Widmore helped provide a crude map for him to give to the crew?

or could Daniel have made it when he was there before...we all know that his memory sucks....maybe it was in his journal....he also seems to know much to well how to turn the gas off in the station....it was like he was possessed

The "Unknown" could refer to something they are searching for. It's not necessarily a map of known features/place on the island.
As for the picture you posted, I've sliced/changed it every which way I can in Photoshop and the resolution is not good enough to make out anymore words.
If someone can post a higher resolution picture of the map, I can try and filter it to see the letters better and post it for everyone.

i think ben would've known if Faraday had been on the island before... and he might've mentioned it when talking all about Charlotte earlier on... and Faraday wouldn't necessarily need Desmond to be his constant because someone on the island could be his constant...so i don't think he's been there before... and he clearly hadn't been there as of 1996 when desmond visited him....and i don't really see him making too many trans-pacific flights back then....
as for him turning off the gas... i think it's just because he's good with computers and programs or whatever.... clearly it would not have taken him until the ultra dramatic last second to render the gas inert if he had been on the island and actually done so beforehand, poor memory or not.... he seemed to be possessed by his continued failure to turn it off

from lostpedia:
The map has the following:
Logo of the Tempest station
A letter "C" in a circle, presumably representing the camp
Three "Unknown" areas
A letter "H" in a circle, possibly marking the location of the helicopter's landing site (Helipad as indicated by the accompanying text).
Lower right text reads "8° N, 33° E Follow the river to the east end of the grotto + head due east towards the smaller mountain range. Helipad found just north of mountains."
"Possible <unreadable> (route?) through northern mountains"
Two articles, one is covered by Daniel's thumb, the other is difficult to read.

This site has a pretty good break down on the map:

I wonder why a pass through to the North would be important? How could they have never gone to that side of the island? They seem to have boated all around the island and even to that neighboring island.
Speaking of the neighboring island where the cages were, wonder why that's not on the map or how they get to it. Is it inside this bubble around the island?

i think ur on to something widmore had already captured one of bens men there was no telling what length he would go to to get a map of that island

And if its the ships log, why doesn't it say something about how the ship ended up in the middle of the island. When it was lifted? and dropped? why didn't the dynamite blow up?

Daniel's map and Daniel in general are very interesting. I personally think Daniel has been to the island but the radiation has him goofed up. He might have been a part of Dharma in someway or had someone he cared about who was involved. Those on the island had to have people back home who were helping. Supplies, technology etc.
Daniel made a note in his journal about Des being his constant. Why would he need to? He's been travelling I think. That's why he's needed a nurse when we saw him crying watching tv, he's a bit of a wreck...

they said at the auction that it had been found in booty taken by pirates, or something like that.

Lostpedia explains it well...
"The Black Rock ledger was the journal of the first mate of the Black Rock sailing vessel. It is a thick, worn leatherbound volume with yellowed pages and the word "LEDGER" gilt on the spine.
To the outside world, the ledger is the only surviving artifact of the final voyage of the Black Rock, which was thought to be lost at sea following its departure from Portsmouth, England, March 22, 1845 on a purported trading mission to the Kingdom of Siam. The ledger was discovered in 1852 among the artifacts of pirates on Île Sainte-Marie, an island off the coast of Madagascar that at the time was a notorious pirate haven. It eventually came to be owned by Tovard Hanso."
The contents of the ledger were never made public and were unknown to anyone outside the Hanso family, until the ledger was sold at a Southfield's auction in 1996 as lot #2342. The ledger sold for £380,000 to bidder #755, Charles Widmore. ("The Constant")
