now that it seems ben and widmore are going to battle to the death, is widmore the "economist"?

i would think so... before, i thought that Abaddon was the Economist but then realized he was too small potatoes for that and that he's just an intermediary... so i think the smart money is on Widmore being the Economist...

I still dont know...remember Elsa tells Sayid that the economist hates modern technologies....this does not sound like the widmore we know and hate...maybe its jacob...i mean he is all shacked up in a hick cabin with candles and no electricity....lol...??

widmore seems to be pretty old fashioned though... it's not like we've seen him being too hands on with any modern technologies... we've seen him drinking finely aged scotch, bidding at a traditional style auction, and being driven around in assorted cars...but we haven't seen him on a cell phone or anything like that...

Widmore being the economist totally makes sense. Kinda random but think of how Widmore sponsored that sailing trip that resulted in Desmond being trapped on the island. Maybe the contest was just a front for finding the location of the island...

or conversely, it could be that he tracked desmond somehow and when he didn't come back he might have zeroed in on his location eventually which is what brought the freighter close to the island

Widmore also used towels when handling the faucet in the restroom. In really classy places, that's an option. In retro classy places, it's expected. It's partly why the towels are there, i mean besides the obvious.

I actually agree with the reason for the race...he figured with all of the sailboats out there...someone was bound to pass over to the island...BUT...what luck that it was Des???

Oh, and yes, I think he's the Economist. Hmmmmm, would Desmond fight Sayid to save Widmore's life if Penny asked him to? Battle Royale!!!!!!

Penny would never ask him that so I think Desmond would end up killing Mr. Widmore when all is said and done... that's kind of a random remark to make but it'd be weird if that's how it all turned out now that i think about it

Not so random if you consider:

Sayid working for Ben as a hired killer in future
Ben vs Widmore in past/present/future
Desmond is devoted to Widmore's daughter Penny in past/present/future
We've seen pretty big twists in the past...

Also:
We are not sure how Penny feels about her father at this point.
We have not seen Desmond interact with Ben in any way. Does Ben know much about Desmond?

or....does penny end up opposing her dad when she learns how her dad treated desmond, not to mention the other nefarious deeds he's orchestrated?

Yes. I tried getting to that, but my senile mind slowed me down.

oh, i was referring to my remark being random, not yours... i was just saying it was a random thought i was having, not like i was seriously theorizing about it, but it would be strange if an off the cuff remark such as that turned out to be true... like i'd be wrong all the times i try to be right but when i'm just messing around i actually get it dead on

I belive at this time. That Widmore is the economist. It makes sense why he used an old fashion pager. It's harder to trace. Pluss a pager wouldn't give off a location from where the page was from as a cell phone would. Penny said she knows about the island. So that tells me she found out a bunch of information threw her hired artic men that found the location of the island. I belive she also knew that Des was sent on a race around teh world. He even told her so. I also belive Widmore set up the race for that specfic reason. To locate the island.

Oh, okey-dokey. Yeah, all this speculating can be like a roll of the dice sometimes.
