okay they were not quite but.....why did the others have kate and sawyer break the rocks up?

part of me wonders if it was a meaningless exercise designed to humiliate them and mould them into being subserviant. part of me wonders if they were actually gonna use the ricks for something.

also - why did they ahve other others working on it? we have seen they have their own little judicial system - were these people being punished too or was this just their job?

I remember in one episode either this season or last, but Juliet mentioned that Ben was having them build a runway and thats what the breaking rocks was for, but so far they havent mentioned if the construction is still going on since Ben is with Locke and them and the other Others were on the way to the temple (or perhaps The Tempest).

would just like to say about the reference to the tempest their that alot of the people on this forum might not of started watching season 4

yeah but a runway for planes wouldn't other people see it to? how would they be able to find the island again?
