I ran outside to help and saw the fox... but didn't put two & two together until this morning.

I live in one of the top 10 safest cities in the country, and I've only seen one fox before in my life. (on vacation.)
So I guess both were equally strange. :D

10 safest in the country? Really? That's incredible, JD! Sorry pal but I don't believe you. (Hahaha....little sentimental stroll of days gone by for ya. :D)
You know, something very strange is going on in the midwest. We've had a few coyotes, foxes and bobcats strolling around the burbs out here too. What is up with that?

so, after you went outside and saw the fox, then what happened? there must have been some reason you did not go back to sleep.

I guess there was a coyote around here too, (a few cities over, but...) not long ago.
Normally, I would blame it on 'development' but there's not much of that going on, these days!

Check this out....I stand corrected. They thought it was a cougar, not a bobcat. Bobcats were found 13 miles away....this is in the burb next door to me.

This is going to sound crazy but you can soak rags in ammonia and strategically place them around the perimeter of your yard. That should act as a stinky barrier and keep the little buggars at bay. (I'd be careful if there are any young kids who have access to your yard though.) I have to do the same thing every time I put my garbage out so the raccoons don't rip my garbage apart and leave it all over the yard.

Find a large tree and paint a bulls-eye below it. Hang a large boulder in a sling above the bulls-eye attached to a quick release pulley system with a pressure sensitive plate right below the boulder. Put some fox seed on the plate and when the fox eats some -- Splat.

They aren't really coming into my yard. Both times, he/she/they have been in the street, in plain sight.

You can buy critter cages. One big enough to catch a fox though would be $30-50. You put the bait in and eventually you'll catch him. I've caught squirrels with the $25 jobs and then relocated them to some other neighborhood far, far away.
Of course, a fox might be worthy of harvesting the pelt....especially if its a Silver fox. Some fox pelts might pay for the cage (http://query.nytimes.com/gst/abstract.html?res=9A06E1DF133BE633A25755C2A9679C94 6296D6CF). In that case, I suggest relocating to off city premises and popping it in the head with a .22 so the pelt is not damaged in any way.

I actually have a dictation device next to my flashlight, so people can hear it/them.
My friends are all making fun of me. :D
I have another issue. I could trap it, but we have a couple of cats that my neighbors feed, and I don't want them to get caught.
I'm making it sound like wild kingdom, but it really isn't.
These little guys were out in the cold all winter, and my neighbors and I are just good people... so we fed them.

Heehee.....pickle plant. They start out as cucumbers first, right? :D
I envy your green thumb, JD. I can't grow anything except hair.
I wonder if the foxes aren't coming around to eat the cat food? I know they'll do that if there is a regular food source. Poor little kitties anyway! Someone needs to give them a home. :(
JfromtheD

I'm totally clueless regarding the pickle plant.
I figured I'd water it and *presto* a Clausen/Vlassic pickle would grow.
But they seem to become a pickle first, then a cucumber. :D
As far as the cats, they are really sweet. You have experienced midwest winters... theses little guys would come to my door, covered in snow and ice.
The one in the picture had his eye torn wide open from a fight... I didn't think he'd make it, but he did. He's the "Man in Black kitty." :D

Ugh, you're killing me! If I didn't have too many critters already (and a HUGE fear of becoming the crazy cat lady at 40 :D) I would scoop them up and keep them forever. No kitty should be covered in snow and ice.

Heehee....that's one of the things I dig about cats the most. They're independant thinkers and amusingly tenacious. My cats are always getting themselves in the strangest pickles (I weaved pickles back into the convo just for you. ;)) and we get to sit back and watch them noodle it out. Quite amusing! :D
You're lucky to be so content with your home AND neighbors, JD. I think that's a rarity. I suppose that off-sets the occassional fox screaming in the middle of the night, huh?
JfromtheD

So lucky! We are a nice little tight knit group.
I can leave my door unlocked and have no fear of any shady business.
We'll let each others pets out, if asked... and we're all there for each other when a home improvement project pops up.
I can't say enough nice things about them. :)
