Why did Ben insist that Locke's Dad be killed? Was this a plan for bigger things?

i wonder about this also.richard said ben knew locke wouldn't kill him and wanted to embarass locke. maybe true or mayb other reason ben wanted lock dad dead. i thought if he was alive he coulda been lockes constant. mayb ben wanted locke not to have a constant but honest i got no frickin idea :0

i was wondering about this too. but does locke need a constant since he has no intention of leaving the island? so far we've only seen the time-travel thing happen to people who have gotten off track while trying to go to or from the island. right?:confused:

true he may not need constant, just try to think why he might want locke dad dead. guess he could always have been telling the truth and he need to die so locke can "grow" dunno lol

I think it was a test. If you notice, besides the knife in the back, John has repeatedly refused to shoot people or follow through on his threats. I think John is a nice guy at heart and generally just wants people to like him.

By shooting his dad I think Ben was seeing how far he could take him. By all rights John's dad deserved it but John is just not the killing type. Ben knew the terrible things that his dad did to him and by empowering him to kill him he would have gained a certain amount of control over him, as well as releasing a side (the killer instinct ) of John that he could use in the Future. Ben knows John doesn't want to go any where and would benefit by that.

I think the only reason he threw the knife into whats her faces back is because he's terrified to leave the island as it has given him a normal life again.

He didn't count on Richard gumming up the works and providing Sawyers name and backstory.

Because Ben was becoming a rogue figure by not following Jacob's list? He hates Ben and doesn't want him to be the leader anymore? He believes in Locke? Many possibilities.

Maybe it has something to do with how Locke interacts with the island or Jacob. Ben is allways claim to be one of the good guys yet he murdered his father. Is this hampering his relationship with some as yet unexplained entity?

Ben obviously sees Locke as threat to his position as primary protector and leader on the Island and hoped to level the field by coercing Locke into fratricide. Locke said he couldn't do it. Not wouldn't do it. He had no problem manipulating Sawyer into doing for him.

I never thought of associating it with a constant thing. I just thought it was because Ben was jealous of Locke and wanted to embarrass him like Richard said. I do think there was some truth to the whole point he was getting to kill him for though - the whole moving on with his life thing. What I don't get is how Locke couldn't kill the man who threw him from a window but could kill Naomi in a second - maybe he changed from the moment he got Sawyer to kill his father, like Ben was trying to get him to do

Because his father had power over him and Naomi did not. If he killed his father, his father would be unable to accept him in the future. He needed to keep the hop alive. Naomi's existence posed a threat to his hope of a normal/grand life on the island.

Hmmm yeah, I just thought that since he had his dad killed, he changed into a tougher man, and not altogether for the better!

MY THOUGHTS:

It isn't that Ben wanted Locke's dad dead, or wanted to embarass Locke. I really think Richard just told him that to drive a wedge in between Ben and Locke because if you look at it from Richard's perspective, he has been on the island a LOT longer than Ben yet ben has taken the island as his own.

The reason that I think Ben wanted Locke to do it was to test his mettle. Could John willingly kill someone he loved even though he had done him wrong?

Ben is obviously looking for someone to help watch over the island. In ordre to protect the island, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes which is why Ben had all that gas that could kill everyone.

Could Locke prove himself by killing someone he loved? IF he could do that, he could kill anyone. All Ben was doing was trying to see if Locke could be a worthy successor.

If, we assume, all islanders will need a constant, then cannot we assume they will be able to use each other as constants. That is, for those who had connections prior to taking off on Oceanic 815. For example, Jack gave John a nod on the plane. There were several connections made in the airport. Thoughts?

P.S. I'm in the Pacific Time Zone and I am SO JEALOUS of those of you watching LOST right now!
