View Full Version : Things that work.

I was working today and it seemed like everything I tried to use was broken or not working right. Can't anybody make anything right, I thought. I started thinking about that then started thinking about all the great ideas that did work.

Here are some of the things I thought of that work just like they're supposed to.

zippers
paper bags
paper clips
Bic lighters
Levis
Visine
Rolaids
Hershey's chocolate bars
Cheap reading glasses
white cotton socks
boxer briefs
Nyquil
straw hats
cylinder locks
3 hole loose leaf paper
# 2 pencils
Coca Cola
cement

Then there's the other stuff.....
PCs
Dish Network
electric stoves
self cleaning ovens
no line trifocals
the two party system
our current health care system
center turning lanes (suicide lanes)
federally built levees
Amtrak
everything BP has done for the last three months
Vista
working for a living.

Anything to add?

NY drivers are bad...but Jersey drivers are worse! ;):D

I once had to go to Jersey with a friend to get a suit. We had to go to the Men's Warehouse not too far over the Outerbridge. We could SEE the friggen Men's Warehouse, but couldn't get across the damn street. You can't just turn left! grrr! It wasn't on the main road, it was just off it...so it took us a half hour just to figure how to get there. This is why I hate Jersey! Sorry to all my Jersey peeps!

Maybe I should be in the venting thread :o

Hey! That was near The Coat Factory, right?

Yeah, NY drivers are bad .... but mostly for the flipping off and screaming while driving. As drivers, even though they are always rushing around, they don't really drive all that bad ... just fast. :)

Speaking of traffic, here's something that works. 4 way stops. Too many times I've seen traffic lights at busy intersections break and traffic actually gets better. And there's nothing worse than sitting at a long red light when you're the only car in sight.

myu

The two party system is definitely not working.

You frequently hear about politicians voting purely along party lines, despite the logic and relevance of the opposite vote. I have to believe that there's a 50% or more drag to political efficiency due to having two predominant parties.

Anyway...

On the subject of things that work:
GE alarm clock radios. Bullet proof and well designed. I've got a couple that were made in the early 1980's and they're still going strong, keeping very good time. :)

Fountain pens. Yeah, I know... they do run out of ink. But if you know how to refill and maintain them, they last and last and last... ballpoint pens usually stop working for me, even if they have tons of ink still inside. What happens is a pocket of air develops inside the ink reservoir near the tip and creates a barrier... and you cannot get the ink to "flow" back together.

Polarized sunglasses. They really do cut the glare, and do it very well.

I'm sure there's much more stuff... :)

what works? not much these days, today here comes a guy - dipstick's supliers son to bring him a thing that goes on the BRAND NEW AC he was installing that would hve prevented him from getting it going - he spends more time fixing "new" equipment than old, it is bullsh@+ and he wastes time, gas and wear n tear on the old truck going back for stuff that should have not been f%$ed up to begin with. Jersey drivers? I live about 12 minutes from Wisconson - worst drivers in the lower 48 and they just let 'em out like it is ok.
but this laptop of Casey's still works so that is good.

can't think of much that works these days but plenty of things that don't:

police
city workers
state workers
federal workers
(the above for the most part)
the senate
the house
state senate
state house
city council
government in general
and yes the DMV
the courts

hmmm....seems to be a trend

quitting smoking
losing weight
eating healthy
exercising
drinking less

hmmm....another trend

People's turn signals
safe distances from the rear of my car
people changing lanes
stopping at stop sings
not blowing red lights
my horn

uh...yeah...another one

things they sell on infomercials
things you get at dollar stores
things from china
plastic bags at the grocery store
vending machines
anything that says it helps you lose weight
things they say make your pipe or boobs grow (so i hear) despite ENDLESS spam
clothes that are supposed to make you look thinner
things that are supposed to make your hair grow
things that are supposed to attract women/men

Maybe I should start to re-think things...

I've been looking forward to trying one of those po'boys... I'll make sure to find one made with imported Chinese shrimp... and tell all my friends where to find them.

And my vacation dollars just might be better spent in Mexico, than Florida or any other southern states. They don't need the money.

Another thing that works, Freeware. Can't afford that expensive software you need? There's probably a free program out there that will do whatever you need it do. Ever wish you had Photoshop but don't want to spend over $1000 for it? Gimp is a free program that does most of what you want from PS. Open office is a pretty good substitute for MS Office.

Before you shell out big bucks on a program do a search on Cnet.com or Tucows. There's probably a free version there and you can read user and editor revues before you download it.

The problem with British production is that there was this inconsistency in quality and bizarre electrical system thing... I'll never forget the electrical troubles that two friends of mine had with MG and Triumph cars. They both were determined and stuck with the brands through a couple of models and then finally abandoned them.

Initially, when BMW had a bulk of the Mini Cooper production taking place in the UK, the QC problems kept coming up to the point where they shifted production. I think only 25% of the assembly takes place in England now.

But yeah... older British cars? I'd stay away for fear of those dreaded electrical problems. ;) I must admit that Aston Martin makes extremely attractive looking cars. I wouldn't mind a DB9 in my driveway.

I'll give you that....the wine is the best in the world...

my Aston is an 07 plate (2007) DBS coupe and while I get extreme pleasure looking at the thing it would be nice to be able to drive the dam thing without the constant fear of it breaking down...yeah it's usually an electrical problem...how I long for the day's when all you had to do was smack the starter motor with a hammer. I've been arrested twice because the tracker has gone off and 'called Aston' to say it's been stolen.

The Germans make the nicest most reliable cars, while the Japanese make the ugliest most reliable cars in the world that never go wrong, you want a work horse by Japanese.

Truly the best car I've ever owned is a Ford Focus ST , that car gets used everyday, I've had it 4 years, I do have it serviced regular, it's never broke down, never not started, everything works and it's a joy to drive.

British car manufacturing is dead, it's just assembly now, and most of that is abroad, it's just too expensive to build here now.

I use them to seal up half eaten bags of chips. They also work to organize all those cables from the computer along with wide butterfly paper clips (these work great).

Not the answer I was hoping for ...

Really...so is that an old wives tale? :)
I've been chased by a bull twice in my life.....pretty scary both times and I don't think I was wearing red now that I think about it!! lol

I had better not be! But it was my mother in law who had an upset tummy. I told her to try it. She had never tried that trick (not from the US or Canada) and it worked for her.

Nice on the wishful thinking there lady :p

On snooze ... hilarious! :D
Just keep the saltines near the bed and don't even get up before you eat a few. That seems to work real well from what I heard. I honestly had only one day of morning sickness and it was in my ninth month. Go figure. Like I said, just lucky I guess. *shrugs*

hehe, been using that little line for a few years now.
Ahh ok. Lucky you didn't get it at all. A friend of mine who just had a baby had it bad in the first trimester. Poor baby. We went to Sweden to visit her and she spent a good deal of time in the bathroom.

Aww, that's terrible. I had a friend who spent all nine months that way with each pregnancy. She even wound up in the hospital a few times from being so dehydrated. But, I didn't get away completely unscathed. My delivery was totally insane.

Have you ever watched a bullfight? It's interesting, but I can't get around the cruelty. In Portugal they have bloodless bullfights.
