Mailling Large Costumes to Con Hotels

I have a fairly large main costume this year that would demand its own checked bag on the plane. I'm trying to figure out if it would be easier to mail it to friends driving down, or if I can trust the hotels to keep a package for me until I arrive. What has been people's experiences if they've done this? Did your costume survive okay?
