Hi Folks:
Charlie's Alive!! ;)
I've got the following questions about Charlie's death:
1. Why did he lock himself inside the room?
Presumably he did this to lock the door and prevent the water from flooding the main chamber. However, there is a problem with this theory. In the instant of time he had to make his decision, the natural assumption would be that just going outside the room and holding the door closed would have been just as effective. The water inside the room would have held the door closed just as effectively as locking the door.
This assumption of course is wrong. The air pressure in the large chamber is at a pressure greater than the water inside the room because it is in equilibrium with the open water 2 feet below floor level. The door would therefore have been pushed open.
But Charlie could not have thought this through in time and probably did not know enough physics anyway.
So, why didn't he just leave the room and close the door??

2. After making the mistake of locking himself inside the chamber, why did the water go above the top of the porthole??
Unless the metal over the porthole was ruptured (and there is no visual evidence for this), the water would not have risen over the porthole. As soon as air was prevented from escaping through the porthole, the air pressure inside the cabin would prevent any further rise of the water.
Charlie, could then escape through the open porthole and swim to the surface. Of course he would have to make sure that he exhaled all the way during his ascent to stop his lungs from rupturing.

3. Even if the hull is ruptured and water fills the chamber. Why did Charlie not wait for the chamber to fill and then make an attempt to escape through the open porthole??
As he dies, we see him crossing himself (with his left hand - Catholics cross themselves with their right - is there any faith that use the left hand??) in calm water. It is clear that water has stopped gushing in through the open porthole. He could therefore have easily escaped.

These are the questions that woke me up at 4 am this morning. I had to write to you guys, the gurus of LOST to find the answers to these puzzlers. Hope you can throw some light on these issues. :)
Perhaps the writers realize all the above and therefore Charlie is really alive and will make a comeback later in the series. So when he "appeared" to Hurley later in the mental asylum, he was really alive and just playing a prank.
Cheers,
