Before Dharma got to the island, there were the indigenous people which Dharma called the hostiles.

In the present, anyone who becomes pregnant on the island, and tries to mature in the pregnancy there dies in the 2nd trimester.

Now heres the question. How can the indigenous people have survived if you cannot reproduce offspring?

Answer? There was no problem before Dharma. The plague/virus was created by Dharma in order to kill off the perceived "hostiles". Dharma could always bring in new blood to keep things going, or they had an antidote or could try to make one.

Amen brother. Plus the original people surely wouldn't have been of European descent as most of the Others seem to be.

Remember Desmond was regularly shooting himself with something at first.

I suppose they could have taken women off of the island in order to conceive and then bring them back. They are the only ones who knew how to get off/on the island....Ben did it to recruit Juliet.

Just a thought. Before Ben came to the island, Dharma people as well as the Natives had no issues reproducing. But remember Ben had killed his mother in child berth(unwillingly). So I believe that Ben is the cause of these labor deaths. OR
The others are living forever and found some fountain of youth thing so they don't need to reproduce, they just don't die. Richard is like 90 or somthing c'mon the dude didn't age a bit, bull.

but where these hostiles born on the island or did they just claim it before dharma did? and maybe they dont reproduce, maybe they just take people in.

"Before Ben came to the island, Dharma people as well as the Natives had no issues reproducing"

That's an assumption. It could be correct, but I don't recall any mention of birthing by Dharma Initiative.
