Admittedly this theory is out there, but what do you think?

The reason the freighter is a piece of junk is because Widmore is going to sink it when get gets what he wants. Widmore doesn't want word of the losties to get out - hence the cover-up. so to protect his cover-up story the freighter crew has to be eliminated.....loose lips sink ships! So why buy a spanking new freighter if you plan to sink it?

Could be. I don't think the freighter is even Widmore's though. I think he just hired a crew that knew the waters well. These guys seem to be from Australia so they would be familiar with the area.

agreed. the ship doesn't belong to widmore. he hired the captain and his ship. actually he didn't even do that. he hired that creepy dude to hire them all.
