if i followed this right - widmore is apparently a real threat to find the island, and it's ben's mission to prevent that from happening. ben and the island need michael to protect the island so the island somehow prevented michael from killing himself. maybe 'someone' went into the future and saw that michael would buy that gun and they rendered the gun useless ahead of time, but that suicide run in the car was genuine. he should have died. instead he walks out of the hospital.

so the island can control events in manhattan? how does that happen? what's going on? supreme being stuff? i have no idea, but this looks like a lot more than time travel.

plus, ben and the island are communicating somehow because michael was deemed important. ben and the island's actions are coordinated - through jacob?

When Tom said that to Michael the very first thing i thought was SUPREME BEING!!! It would explain ALOT of things!

Well, who is really behind it is still up for debate I think. It's all a matter of whether you trust Ben or Widmore at this point. Both are saying the other is responsible.
