I don't know if this has been touched on before, but I am wondering if Ben's mom dying in childbirth is somehow related to why women die during pregnancy on the island. Since he is connected to the island in a special way then he could be the reason women are dying. Or I could be wrong :)

Then why would he steal children and recruit people/let the survivors live there?
But the mother dying is an interesting angle.
Yeah this is interesting...

Interesting....
However, Both Roussou and Claire gave birth on the Island 16 years apart. AND, Sun got pregnant on the Island...so it can happen.

Perhaps pregnant women dieing is related to the time difference between island and "non-island".
Hear me out; If the average pregnancy is "set" at about 9 months, a rift in the time frame could have aversive effects on the health of the child or mother.
You could tie in some of the other theories about time travel or teleportation here, and conclude that a pregnant mother who left the island via "Ben's hidden room" would essentially cause that 9 month cycle to be off, thanks to the time difference on and off the island.
Now, some will ask when/why the mothers were leaving the island to begin with, but maybe it brings in elements of a dual existence on and off the island.
Now I'm rambling and I'm pretty sure way off base, but just some thoughts.

while good in theory I can't see why timetravel would affect the fetus.. why wouldnt it just travel the same as the host.

From what we have seen thus far, it really has no effect on the fetus. The children born on the island live, while the mother's do not.
So maybe the whole traveling (time or physical) aspect has biological repercussions on the host, but not the unborn child.
