I think the shooter is Jacob, who is the lost captain of the "Black Rock" who has been stuck on the Island for Some 150 or so years. And the original "hostiles" were his crew. They were no match for the Dharma people and all were killed except Jacob. He hid and watched and learned everything about the island. Since he never aged he's still hanging around Playing with Bens's mind.

oh i dig this theory. however, i don't think his whole crew aka hostiles died. after all, aren't they who converted ben to join them? that could explain why richard always looks the same age...well sorta

I enjoy this theory very much, it is simple yet elegant. I agree with the Jacob aspect whole-heartedly, but perhaps Richard is the son of someone on the Blackrock, or a subsequent generation thereof. This could also apply to the rest of the hostiles. Id like to see this idea explored further.

your all nuts.... Magus Hanso was the captain of the Black Rock. And a Widmor was the 1st mate. Richard Alpert might be a descended of the crew, who by the way is an imortal....
