when locke originally goes to the cabin with ben there seems to be a trail of something - like a black ashy substance around the cabin. that made me think that it was something to keep jacob trapped within. which makes sense as he asks for help.
perhaps jacob can only come out of that area if he manifests himself as someone or something else - which might explain all the dead folks appearing randomly and i like the idea that he is also the black mist.
but the black mist cannot get inside the barracks with the security thing up and running whereas we know the images of the dead can as ben sees his mother at his window.

Oh, I like that theory of Jacob being trapped, and only being able to come out as a manifestation of someone dead. I really think you're on to something..

I refuse to believe that the mist Monster can't get past the security fence. I know it is shown in 1 episode that it can't, but come on now, if it's clever enough to change into people, it's clever enough to get over that damn fence just like Locke, Kate, and Sayid did. I mean, it lifts Eko up into the air and can move quite liberally.
Or perhaps it simply can't get past the sonic fence in MIST form - but if it takes on human form, why not?

yeah you would think it can just hop over the top lol! or maybe its not the fence its fearful off but what is beyond.....
but does the bottom of the mist ever leave being close to the ground - if that makes sense?

What about that? The premiere episode, Hurley accidently? Discovers the cabin in which JACOB is in. But who is the person in there with him? As Hurley investigates the cabin, someone appears infront of him. I don't have an image but if you find it let me know. I believe it to be Locke. Look specifically at THE EYE. Could it be Locke? For instense Locke shows up just moments after Hurley freaks out from the cabin disappearing and reapearing.

there is a thread with some pics on to compare with the eye on here somewhere.

I don't believe that the eye is locke. I saw the pic posted and it looks like the face with "the eye" has darker hair on it.

I thought that same thing about about the black ash or whatever, it reminded me of in horror movies and stuff what they put salt around the doors and windows to keep ghosts and demons out or whatever, so that made me think he was trapped too

Hmm I never noticed that before, I'll have to go check it out. I'm glad I DVR all the episodes...I think I've seen the 1st episode 5 times already!

i dont agree casue if you are saying the mist(jacob) canot enter to "others" side then why was WALT standing over Locke when locke got shot by ben and was laying with the dead pkelotns

At this point, the others had left the barracks, left the shield circumference. They were making there way somewhere else, to the temple I think? Ben and Locke might have been within the circumference on their way back, or not, I do not think they were. So the mist not being able to enter is still valid.

and as i said in my orignal post - we know that the images of the dead can appear in the barracks when the shield is working as ben sees his mother at his window
