I was rewatching the episode where Walt was reading the comics. I think the comics might have contained clues in it. Only because it showed a polar bear in it. BOOM, next thing you know they find a polar bear in the jungle. When Walt's father asked him where he got it he said "I found it." He doesn't tell if he found it on the plain OR on the island. What do you think?

watch for the episode where it shows hurley's flashback of boarding the plane, it will answer your question about the comic.

Come to think of it, I believe that it was part of the finale.. when Hurley was rushing to get back the US for his Mom's birthday.

But I think the comic book does contain clues. I think the whole polar bear thing was to throw us off track. If you watch closely and look at the page right after the polar bear it shows some sort of craft with super hero types standing in front of it. If you zoom in and look above the craft (I don't know if you would call it an airplane or space craft) you see a four fingered hand pushing it down. I have posted about this before.

In one of the interviews a woman writer said that when they were brainstorming about Lost, they needed an exotic animal on the island and she just came up out of the blue with a polar bear! Now I find it hard to believe that they did not take that idea and run with it making it much more by adding Walt's comic book, the bear cages, and the bear cave where Eko was wounded, and on and on. But, maybe that was just to throw in another anomaly to get everyone sidetracked as you say. We haven't seen any bears for a long time. Guess that idea, in the long run, didn't bear fruit! But it was so much fun speculating anyway!LOL
