So Sam Toomey and Leonard Simms heard the numbers 16 years prior to 815 crashing. They heard them over the airways in the South Pacific. Didn't Danielle crash 16 years prior to the Oceanic 815? It says it was 1988. When Hurley told Leonard that he won the lottery with those numbers he said,"You've opened the box." Didn't Ben at one point tell Locke about the box?

So do you think the numbers were coming from the Island? Maybe we need to look into those numbers more.

The numbers were originally being transmitted from the Black Rock Radio Tower until Rousseau changed the transmission to her distress signal. This is from The Lost Notebook.
So when Rousseau got to the Island in 1988 those numbers were already going.

The Numbers 4 8 15 16 23 42 are one of Lost's most prominent recurring themes.
They were first featured prominently in the Season 1 episode "Numbers" as the winning lottery numbers that made Hurley a multimillionaire. He first heard them from Leonard in the mental hospital, who originally heard them with Sam Toomey when they were in the Navy together in the Pacific. Because of the run of bad luck Hurley experienced after winning the lottery, he believes the numbers are cursed. After seeing the Numbers in Danielle's notes, he seeks her out; she explains that a transmission of them drew her people to the Island, and she believes him about the curse.

A mathematician named Valenzetti calculated a mathematical formula for the end of the world, the ‘core numbers’ of which are 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. These numbers occur everywhere, he said, and predict earth’s destruction. This finding was presented to the United Nations; they did not believe or care and so discarded it. Alvar learnt of this formula and knew that it was correct as it correlated with what the island had revealed to him.

yeah, this is part of whats frustrating - we know all this information, where the numbers originate from, how they have been used, where they keep popping up yet i still feel like we need to know more!

My point was that the numbers were around before Danielle heard them and stopped broadcasting them.

Right and that is why the Island is the Island- because of the numbers. That is the only thing that is a constant. If the numbers have to do with the end of the world and they are trying to but in on that then when things correct themselves don't they have to start over? The plane crashing on the Island with the drug- people didn't get their drugs another but in.

Are you talking about "pandoras box" being opened?
1st, that dude was crazy, so anything he says should be taken with a grain of salt...like some posters on this board. Was it the #'s that caused his meltdown?
2nd, the #'s originated on the island (i think). They were pressed into the hatch, and used for the "button" to control the electromagnetic release or whatever.
The question is, why these exact #'s. I think the Valenzetti Equation has something to do with why the #'s are 4 8 15 16 23 42.

Joe is right about the numbers being from the Valenzeti equation. The reason the numbers were being broadcast 16 years ago was because DHARMA was supposedly working on a way to change these values to put off the end of the world. The numbers were broadcast constantly so that Hanso could check on their progress. If the numbers changed on the broadcast it would tell Hanso that the experiments of DHARMA were successful.

I tried the search on google for the numbers and for this Valenzetti equation, and all it keeps coming up with is reference to lost, lostpedia, or Hanso foundation.... Is this a real equation, or am i stupid......

I don't believe it's a real equation but I am no mathematician.

I found this on wiki...
Information on Enzo Valenzetti's background comes almost entirely from a Wikipedia article on the Valenzetti Equation created by those behind the Lost Experience. However, as the content is complete fiction, it was removed from the website by Wikipedia's moderators. The information was confirmed by Speaker, however, to be "VERY accurate", and has been accepted as official information as part of the alternate reality game. Much later, in-game website valenzettiequation.com reiterated much of the information from the old Wikipedia article for fans who may have missed the clue before Wikipedia removed the information.

Haha thats what makes this show so great, the fact that we get so caught up with it, we think everything is real! A lot of what they use is based on previous theories, but not everything is based on facts. Thats the fun in looking everything up! :D

Yah after playing a little bit of the find815 game, I've noticed they keep putting a huge emphasis on the seat numbers so I've always thought there was a point to them?? Hmm...

We couldnt get them to match but it was a good thought

Maybe they represent something else for each of the survivors, not seat numbers. Seat numbers would be too obvious, I would think.
Or maybe it's just a coincidence. Ha.

I swear, the numbers is my favourite ongoing theme in Lost! I can't wait for more about them! Do you ever notice that the number 15 comes up the least?
