Here's an Idea, what if the Temple that the rest of the Others went to is where the 4-toed statue is? It kind of makes since doesn't it. Temples are where you usually find Idols of worship or symbols of praise.
Why wouldn't that statue be at the Temple as sort of an offering from an earlier, ancient settlement/inhabitance of the island?
An I off my rocker for thinking this?

It seems a fairly safe assumption. I don't remember seeing any kind of building when we saw ol' 4-toes, but I could certainly be mistaken. I was busy counting toes and all.

The statue of liberty it different looking than that, for starters its green! And it has 5 toes. And she's wearing a dress/toga.
I agree that the Temple is probably close tho...
Or is the Temple another station? Or the central station??

Indeed, the 4toe statue would likely be close to the location of a temple.
When you like at civilizations, when there are huge statues made, it is because the civilization has become quite prosperous. The statue is likely centuries old from a past great civilization. Somehow they faded away somewhat like the Maya, Inca, Aztec, and only remnants remain like the temple and the statue, either having been eroded or destroyed in a war or rebellion...
Maybe the island is Atlantis or Lemuria? Wouldn't that be something!

First time posting, love the show and the thought that goes into all of it.
I agree that there's a possibility of this being a lost civilization such as Atlantis considering that it has been speculated that the level of progression when it comes to technology was thought of as being advanced, many speculations that it was a technologically advanced society that far surpassed anything we have come to know, up to this point.
Then again, it could be something completely different.

Kinda of off topic, but the first thing that stuck me when I saw the remains of that statue was that it could be the Colossus of Rhodes (I'm new so if this was discussed on another thread just ignore it). It is considered one of the seven wonders of the world and disappeared misteriously after it fell. When the statute fell it toppled over at or around the knees (similar to the statue in the episode). Seems to me the island is a likely place for it to turn up.

I'll play the other side here and submit to you that there's practically no chance it's the Colossus of Rhodes. Why would the Greeks have built something with four toes?

Hey that's a good thing to bring up... it is possible, with all this talk about time travel and worm holes... it is reasonable to think a time/space event occurred regarding the statue...
