Jacks Chess game

Going back to the chess game jack and ben were having. Now I don't know how much significance or just coincedence, but does the chess board/game sitting on the table with Hurley during the season 4 premier tie in somehow? It might seem simple, but it could be a small clue as to who that lawyer is?

Another "chess" reference I remember in Lost was when they found the flame station and Locke became addicted to the chess game, becoming so addicted that he leaves Mikhail unattended. After finally winning, he types "77" into the computer which in turn unlocks a series of commands. Then after they leave the flame station it explodes. Just thought I'd add that to the ongoing chess theme :)

Since practically everything in this series is planned out to the "T" in production, I'd be surprised if there WASN'T something special about the games actually played OTB (over-the-board). I'm a chess fanatic so I'll go back and watch those. Would be interesting to see:

1.) Who is winning (more or less)
2.) If the games are similar (are the pieces in the same position, close to each other, or seem to be different stages of the SAME GAME perhaps?)
3.) If perhaps the pawns are playing a dominating role in the game (an extremely ironic possibility - proud to have just thought of that one :) )

Good point :) I've never played chess in my life so other than the "light and dark" aspects used, I know nothing haha. I know backgammon was played by Walt and Locke on the beach. So lets see if I can make a list of all these instances:

Locke and Walt play backgammon (not sure if this is like chess or not lol)
Locke plays chess in the flame station
Locke and Ben both play chess together
Jack and Ben also play chess together which is shown in one of the new missing pieces clips
A chess set is shown on the table when the strange visitor comes to see Hurley in the Asylum

I bet if we went back through episodes we'd find out that there are more chess playing instances or maybe random chess games in the background lol

Glad you agree. The idea of white/dark, good evail too I think would be huge clue.

I also am not an advid chess/backgammon player, but would not be surpirsed if Locke was trying to make moves, as if he were playing chess agaisnt jack or against the island. But true to form, everything is related, and I believe has some signifcance. So maybe we will see something come about this idea. but I like where it is going.

Since I'm at work, I don't have immediate access to my DVDs, but I did find a shot online of the chessboard over which Hurley talked to Matthew Abaddon in S4E1 in the asylum. The game is very close to the beginning - it's still in the opening phase. I'll see if I can see what the opening itself is, but so far the game displayed in that scene isn't at an interesting stage (has hardly begun). Although that could be a clue in itself - but probably not.

Just checked over the game that Locke won against the computer at The Flame station - he in fact didn't win the game. The computer had 2 valid moves, thus the game didn't end in checkmate against the computer. And since computers never resign in chess (well, not generally - and certainly not in a program as primitive as the one shown in the series), either it was a production mistake to show the board position or it wasn't necessary to win the game to see the video with Marvin Candle speaking in it (it may just be necessary to reach a winning position, or perhaps successfully continue playing the game for a certain period of time - although I still lean to the production mistake conclusion).

You might be right but I swear I remember him saying "I finally won!" or something like that, which was then able to show him the following commands to type in or whatever. I could be wrong though :)

Well, I don't doubt that he said he won. In fact, I don't even dispute that the fact that he was winning - while the computer had 2 valid moves, the continuation of the game would have given Locke the win (in other words, Locke was in the process of winning, but he had definitely not WON in the Chess sense).

It's like how you know when your team is up 70-0 with a minute to play. Sure, they're going to win. But at that point, no, they have not won.

I think it's a production mistake - although upon further research the game actually played (and the final position reached in the game) was an homage to Kasparov-Karpov in the late 90's when Kasparov [a young upstart Chess player] defeated the reigning world champion to take his crown. That game didn't end in checkmate either - Karpov simply resigned. Before Kasparov, Karpov was the longest reigning World Champion in history.

Something else that might be mentioned, when hugo first learned the numbers he was playing connect-4.

He also was playing connect-4 last week, when the "lawyer" came to see him.

I don't know how much this ties in, but Hurley loves to play games.
