so what does anyone think of the whispers nd smoke monster (smokie) and the electromagnetic thing goin on??
i think that smokie is all the evil on the island, but also a sercurity system for either the dharma ppl or the hostiles...

Rousseau at one point says the monster thing is the islands security system.

A validation for this as being correct, is that Dharma fence was created to block the hostiles... but we have also seen it blocks the security system monster smoke thingy.

We hear the system make mechanical noises. I think this is a trick. Like a sound device to make it seem mechanical. In one episode there is a pan from the left to the back to the right of the smoke, and we can see through it to Jack or Locke, I forget who it was.. maybe Echo? Anyways, my point is that it is translucent/transparent in some way. So for a mechanical device to be there is unlikely. But it could be an advanced form of technology, maybe nano-technolgy. Or holographic tech could be involved to simulate transparency when it is actually a solid object. We know it picks up tress and people, but is also at times smoky without solid substance.

Quite an odd system. Highly advance for sure.

Don't forget Locke was the first one to witness the Monster first hand and told the Losties "I looked into the eye of this island, and what I saw...was beautiful". He then goes on to describe the monster has a "bright light" when talks to Eko who claims thats not what he saw. This can be compared to when Juliet was hiding from the monster and it hovered over her and shown bright lights on her. Not sure what significance this may have but I think its once again important to show how the island percieves Locke as opposed to the others and maybe Juliet has some significance too....maybe Juliet really is good. Haha I still haven't decided if i trust her :)

Good point about the light.

Juliet was with Kate when the flashing occurred. Kate seemed to be in a shadow, so it looks like the primary focus was Juliet. I suspect this is what Locke saw, the bright light. Or it could be a type of scanning that may not be what Locke saw, like emitting frequencies on some specific wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum to analyze life forms at the physical and maybe spiritual/consciousness level? It definitely is a perplexing thing.

I think Juliet can be trusted, well as far as Jack can be trusted... and I don't much trust Jack for the matters regarding the mysterious island, but to save ones life hes the man. That's my personal view of Jack. But Juliet is a good person, shes a doctor of sorts too (researcher), shes a life saver. I don't recall anything yet where she tried to kill the Losties... she seems anti-otherness now :)

I think you guys are getting WAY to far into the science aspect of this creature. Do you guys know why Locke saw the bright light and Ecko saw darkness. Because Ecko was a very bad man before he came to the island, he killed soooo many people, and smuggled drugs, the "Smoke" took him because it knew what he had done. Locke on the other hand was a good man, looked out for his friends on the farm, even when his own father abandoned him, stole his kidney, he still wanted to see him, why? Because John Locke is a good person, and the island knows that, I believe this is why Jacob awaits John, and John can save him from whatever it is.

Yeah it does appear the thing plays on good vs evil in people, hence the scanning light. We only saw it once, at that was Juliet, Locke's episode has not been shown. It may be the same light, or different.

I do think you are underplaying the technological aspect of the creature though. What it does... gong after people, taking people, the trees, the sound, the transparency... these all play into what it actually is. I for one would like to know what it is as well as learn its objective in the good vs evil light vs dark aspect.

everyone wants to know about that thing, I think it was one of the original questions everyone asked about lost, what was that sound, why are those trees moving? They won't say till the end of season 6 LOL. Guarentee it.

On that note. You probly want find out who Jacob truly untill season 6.

You can't help but get Scientific and technical on the Smokie subject. I mean this thing is a work of evloution vs creation. Isn't that funny. Never realy thought of him that way. Science vs creation. is Smokie created or evolved? Is he something of science or somthing of supernatural stance.

yea i have a question.
when eko was going to be killed by smokie
and when he saw his brother.
his brother was very mean to him. eko had said,"you are not my brother."
what do you think happened to his brother?
why would his brother be acting like this?

I think i remember reading in a previous thread that smokie took the shape/personality of his brother, and tricked eko. Leading him into a trap, so the island could take him, his involuntary sacrifice to the island maybe?

Yup, it looks likes its more than just a shadow. The way the black moves across the door, it does not take on the characteristics of a shadow in my opinion.
