random thought popped into my head. we know animals can breed as locke hunted a boar and her calves.

also we have polar bears, rabbits and sharks - now these could have easily been scientifically created - test tubes, clones etc or even 'transported' to the island from somewhere...but it would be interesting if it is natural breeding as the basic biology is the same.

my opinion is probably way out there, but maybe they can reproduce because they are pure? And I hope that made sense lol.

no i was thinking it could be related - its very possible that the island is punishing humans in some way by removing their ability to reproduce.

I feel that the island is some sort of pergatory and that there should be no one born into pergatory. Animals do not have souls and therefore it doesn't matter if they have off spring.

Just my thought.

who says animals dont have souls? lol i am sure the polar bear felt really guilty when it dragged mr eko into it cave :p

it has been confirmed that the island is not purgatory though, although i do understand what you are saying!

yes, I do think that the polar bear enjoyed pulling Eko into the cave. But the island being made at people, so then it would let women have there babies and kill them also.....why not have the island kill off everyone, except Ben....

if the island can keep you from killing yourself, it can probably keep you from reproducing on the island.

This is where I think it gets interesting. There is DEFINITELY a connection between the island and mothers dying at birth and Ben's mother dying when he was born.

Maybe whoever is in control of the island decides the rules in some way. Maybe the reason woman die when giving birth is because the island pulled that rule from Ben's birth - considering it made him so incredibly miserable through life with his father. And so because Ben is in control, his life ultimately dictates what the island does and requires - hence the need for Locke to prove his worth by killing his father.

maybe its almost like a telepathic/telekinetic link? but subconsciously.

like walt with the birds - when he is annoyed or upset, birds die.

I'm so glad this is being brought up. I said this on a post weeks ago, but don't remember anyone replying. Ever since the episode where Ben tells Juliet, "After all I've done to get you here and keep you here..." I've wondered if he actually created the problem with the women's pregnancies somehow to get her to come and also did something to cause it to keep happening so Juliette could accomplish her goal and leave. And I also think maybe he does it because it seemed Ben's dad made him feel responsible for the death of his mom all the time he was growing up. So maybe he's nuts and somehow needed to cause all births to fail so he could convince others and even himself that it is the island's fault, not his. I know, that last part is a little out there, but it's Lost, so we can guess whatever we want, right?

I was just wondering why if animals can breed, why can't humans? Why should we believe that pregnant women die on the island? Claire had Aaron on the island after all. As Sun said to Juliet "Claire had her baby on the island. She's fine. I feel fine. I only have your storiesthat I'm going to get sick." So why should we bother with Juliet? I know she has been on the island for a while, but I mean seriously? Claire was able to give birth to Aaron, why should anyone be worried.

P.S - I wish Kate was pregnant. Damn! That would've been an awesome Skate moment I'd cherish forever. Oh well...

Claire was able to have the baby because Aaron was conceived off the island - just like how Rousseau was able to give birth to Alex. You have trouble when you conceive on the island.

Juliet is not lying, we have already seen flashbacks where Juliet fails to stop whatever is happening to pregnant women and how it has affected her.

Now, I have no problem with the idea that Juliet is lying. I've never fully trusted her. But, I do think we can honestly say she wants to help pregnant women and is extremely frustrated by her inability to do so.

However, I believe Juliet has more purpose to the island than we know. Aside from Ben being obsessed with her (you're mine!) there must be a reason why Ben/Richard told Juliet she'd be on the island for 3 years and then continue to keep her there even though she can't save any pregnant women. Seems like there is something else for her to offer and they need to keep her around until then.

Furthermore, I think Ben knows Juliet can't fix the problem. So why bring her to the island? If Ben brought her to the island just because he's in love with her, then the Others are going to be pissed when they find out (if they haven't already).

Yea, but how or why would he be in love with her BEFORE she came to the island and bring her here. Maybe she's Annie all grown up? The writers have said Annie will be very important to the Lost story, and I had pretty much forgotten all about the flashback with her until I read blogs about it here.

Ben has mommy issues and Juliette reminds him of his mommy. Can you say Oedipus complex?

One of the first things Harper said to Juliet was that she looks "her" and I'd say thats why Ben brought Juliet to the island.
