Rousseau is a puzzle

If anyone's still reading Season 1 threads:
I am [still] going through and watching Season 1 for the first time. Just saw the epi when Rousseau captures Sayid. She seems so competent in this epi. [Yet she also falls apart a bit when 'alex' is brought up]. In Season 3 and 4, she seems not too competent and rather, well... lost.
In the Season 1 epi, she tells Sayid that they are not alone. I guess obviously thats why she has all the booby traps. but when sayid asks if she's seen them, she says 'No, but I've heard them'--the whisperers, I guess.
My questions: Does this mean that, at this point, she's never seen the Others? How could this be after 16 years on the island? Didnt they steal Alex from her? Why wouldnt she try a little harder to get Alex back? How could the Castaways know more about the Others than she? Has she put those booby traps up for 16 years and never caught anyone til sayid..and then ben?

Also, I was intriqued regarding how Sayid bonded with Rousseau and defended her to the rest of the people, even after she had captured him. He seems to really have empathy for her as a mother who has lost her child. You can see the pain he shares with her in his eyes. What could they have in common? Any ideas?

Well, sayid having lost Nadia--or maybe even causing her death would be similar to Rousseau having caused her man's death. We dont know how she lost alex, but that would make most parents feel guilty as well. Couldnt figure whether Sayid empathized with Rousseau to fix her doll--I'd like to think that he did--or whether he just wanted to escape. I'll be interested to watch their relationship more closely when they get back together in later epis.

Waittill you see episode "The shape of things to come" That tells you what is up with Daniale,Karl, and Alex. But that isn't untill season 4. So be carful not to spoil anything. I would sugest watching the rest of the episodes before watching that one.

That is actually a very good question. She must not have captured anyone until Sayid because he asks her if she has seen the others before and she replies that she hears them, she hears their whispers. We also have to take into account that Danielle is definitely crazy. She purposely hides from "the others" instead of going after Alex because she is scared.
