In the unlikely event that you haven't seen series one, there are spoilers here...

I've been puzzling over this question for a while now, as we've been watching it from the start on DVD. When Hurley won the lottery, there would have been huge publicity - indeed we see flashbacks to media interviews, and the news spreads well beyond the USA. And yet, despite his unforgettable size and face, not one person on the island seems to twig that he's "that guy who won a fortune on the lottery", or even say "your face looks familiar but I can't place it."

I haven't seen this point raised before; does anyone agree that this is an oversight on the part of the makers, or is there another explanation?

PLEASE, NO SPOILERS ABOUT SERIES 4! We can't watch it, and will wait til the DVD comes out.

Of course it's no surprise that any one person wouldn't remember his face; my point is that there are 40+ people on the island, and it's stretching credulity that not one of them might have recognised Hurley, who stand out in any crowd.

This would explain things if this was all just a dream made up by the fat kid, but I am sure this is not the case

I'm not certain that it is too much of a stretch... I don't know what any of our state lottery winners look like! Maybe that's because it is not something I pay attention to.

I can't remember the show name but it was when Jin was doing "work" for Sun's Dad and he went to a mans home to deliver a "message". When he got there the mans daughter was watching t.v. and Hurley was on the news. So it was seen in Korea. ;)

I have no idea who the lottery winners are for even the really big wins. I think that unless you know them, you really just don't pay attention.

The cleaning woman for a woman I work with won over $200 million. She lives the next town over from me and I wouldn't be able to pick her out of a lineup if you promised me all her winnings.

Can you describe any big lottery winners? I don't even recall the last time something like that even deemed coverage around here.

I really think you are on to something. Although I agree with everyone here; I would not recognize any big lottery winner myself...the whole Hurley winning the lottery just doesn't make sense.

Like stated above. a lotto winner isn't world wide news. It's only localy viewed news. SO most of the passangers would be from diferant parts of the world or USA.

because of the events that followed up (him going to visit that woman in the kiddle of nowhere, his mums house burning down) he is likely to have won the lottery a few months before 22 September 2004. Now you are obviously in the UK and so you will remember the woman who recently won £35m on euromillions. I bet you wouldn't recognise her if you saw her in tesco's

I get what everybody means about how you don't know who the lottery winners are, but on the show it seemed like they were making an extra big deal out of him winning. He was constantly giving interviews and stuff like that. He's a hard face to forget, even if someone was just channel surfing and saw him for like 2 seconds, I think that they would remember him.

Only Locke recognized Charlie who was a pop star even if a 1 hit wonder.

i thing all the coverage was to show his bad luck and where the numbers came from, and btw i couldnt tell you what any lottery winner looks like and i have seen a few on the news so i dont think its weird at all.

seems as though all the losties were preoccupied with other life affairs. hurley was seen on the news by us, but not by others in the show. even though he clearly was in the news and crowded by the local media.

I have only seen one lotto winner on the news and couldn't give one detail about him.

Actually while Jin and Sun are arguring, there is tv coverage showing on the TV in Korean of Hurley winning the lottery. But they are arguring so they are not paying attention. Don't remember which one but I think its the episode right before or right after we discover he won.

Just to clarify, it wasn't when Jin and Sun were fighting, it was when Jin went to the secretary's house to "deliver the message". Hurley was on the TV that the daughter was watching. I remember seeing it at the time and thinking "wtf?", but that's the whole purpose.

And no, lottery winners have less than 15 mins of fame, so no one would recognize him in the real world.

Except in this case where Hurley was one of the O6 and also was the lotery winner, if fact he is more recognizable now as an O6 than the winner of the lottery
