OK, so I'm out on the West Coast and haven't seen the show yet but am piecing this theory together based purely on what I knew coming into this week and the play-by-play and post-game analysis I've seen on here and in a live chat.
That said, is it possible that Ben is leading a revolution to make The Island free of Widmore's control? It sounds like Widmore had a claim to The Island and then we know that Ben was part of a coup against the Dharma folks and he is now trying to keep Widmore from finding The Island and regaining control of it. (Maybe Widmore had been a hands off leader of the Dharma folks, so he never knew where it was, just that his people were working on it for a purpose Ben deemed evil/wrong)
It just seems to me that Widmore was far away / incapable of quickly responding to The Island's ongoings while Ben was on site and able to usurp Widmore's claim. Very similar to how the U.S. was able to build up an army, revolt and triumph owing to our forefathers' knowledge of the terrain for battles and our physical separation from England. By the way, isn't Widmore British?
