Pillar of smoke

So I guess that when Rousseau sees a pillar of smoke that means that someone is being burned in a funeral pyre and the others are coming for a kid to replace the dead guy since they cannot reproduce.

I'm not sure that it would be a funeral pyre. My question is, how is the smoke not disturbed by the wind and as often as there are pillars of smoke, how come no rescue?!

#2) I might be wrong here, it's been a while since season 2, but I kinda thought it was something danielle made up. Her goal was to steal Aaron so she made up the story to entice them away, leaving Aaron less protected and easier to snatch. It didn't look like the others had anything to do with it. I don't know why she thought the others would trade her child back for "the boy". (turns out to be walt)
