So Rose is convinced the Island heals people. Obviously, she considers herself well. Hurley was sane and stable on the Island. Locke can walk on the Island.......
She brings a mystery into question. Why is Jack sick at the most critical time possible? Their "leader" falls just when his strength is needed most. Ben has suffered a similar experience with his spinal tumor. Why would these events occur in the midst of certain people's health improving.
What is your thought here? Faith vs. reason? random events? punishment vs reward? ???

The funny thing about that question is whether or not Jack's "leadership" is really pertinant to getting them off the island at all.
And if the island wanted Jack out of the picture, he'd be out of the picture IMO.

Well I dont know what I think yet, but it seems to me that Rose feels like Jack pissed the island off, maybe by making the call to the friegties??

Given what we saw in last night's show, the island could be saying "physician heal thyself." Jack's being tested somehow and it's not looking too good for his outcome what with taking clonazepam and alcohol like it's soda and popcorn. It doesn't help to say snap out of it, but I wish he would.

yes, this seems to be a critical turning point for the Losties. The split it caused the groups to pick sides.
I just read in the theories forum by Jon something that somewhat explains the Islands fickle nature.
Jon's Grand Unifying Theory
"As for the healing; I believe that both Locke and Rose have somehow mastered the ability to focus their unconscious will for a positive benefit; both were healed. This, to Ben is of supreme importance because he intends on learning every secret of the island. It's possible that he doesn't know Rose had cancer, which she then cured. If he did know, then he would probably regard her with the same esteem that he does with Locke."
i don't want to agree or disagree yet.....but its something to mull over.

I think that both Rose and John KNOW they are cured of their ailments. The others are not conscious of the abilities of the island. Let's face it something was working in their favor because most people don't survive a plane breaking up in mid-air.
Jack has always been the logical, scientific character on the show. He's denied every situation that has come up that would lend itself to faith as a source of the issue.
I don't know what the answer is, but I suspect that when Desmond turned the failsafe key, the "power" of the island was affected.

excellent thought Glenn,
However, Ben's spinal tumor was there before the plane crashed. He said something like " a spinal surgeon crashes on the Island" I picture the view of the "Others" coming out of their Barracks when the plane is ripping in half.
