First, credit goes to LostFreak21 for bringing this topic up in another thread. In "The Beginning of the End", the scene where we are introduced to Matthew Abaddon, I couldn't help but notice that when he leaves, all it shows is a shadow (or smoke?) leaving out the door. You don't actually see him walk out. Is it possible....I'm sorry, it's Lost...anything is possible, but could it be that Matthew Abaddon in the smoke monster? If this has been posted before I appologize, but I would like to hear what others have to say on the topic.

Why would Smokey follow the Oceanic 6 to the mainland to ask them questions about the people that are left?
Smokey was there and saw all of the people. It knows about the Others in the Dharma village. To quote Juliet speaking to Kate, "we don't know what it is, we just know it doesn't like the forcefield" or something to that affect.
So why would it travel all that way to ask Hurley about the remaining people when it could have stayed on the island and simpley float up to them itself.

I have already theorized before in another thread that it is the Smoke Monster that appears as Charlie to Hurley in S4E1 in the asylum. Therefore, this is completely in-line with that theory. I think it's clear that the Monster is a tool used by someone (my current theory is Jacob - or even perhaps IS Jacob) to manifest itself as various people to accomplish tasks.
The creators of Lost have already said:
1. The Monster can take on human forms
2. We have seen the Monster much more than we think we have
It all ties together, it all makes sense. The Monster wants Hurley to go back to the Island. The motives for this are unclear, but I think the direction is very clear - back to the Island.
I also believe it's possible (I mean, it's highly probable) that the Monster got off the Island WITH the Oceanic 6 disguised as someone else - probably someone that it killed in the process. It's appearing to Hurley in an effort to get him to go back...and I believe the reason he wants Hurley to go back is so that he, the Monster, can tag along and get back HOME...to the Island. The Monster probably had some task to perform off of the Island (probably directed by Jacob), and that task is probably to kill someone - and it sure would tie things up nicely if the person in the coffin that Jack visited is the one that the Monster had to kill.
Now wouldn't it?
P.S. One last edit - the Monster kills in very gruesome ways...which MIGHT be why the casket is closed. Too gruesome to have an open-casket funeral.

First, we don't know for sure who exactly Abaddon is talking about when he says "Are they still alive?" "They" is a very vague term. The fact that Abaddon focused this question towards Hurley may indicate that he is talking about survivors on the island (if there even are any) or maybe the "they" he speaks of are another group of people. The freighters maybe?
Second, if Juliet and the Others don't exactly know what the smoke monster is, it could be very possible that smokie doesn't exactly know who they are. If it can't get past the forcefield, then who is to say it really does know about the Dharma village and it's inhabitants?

So... yeah..
In Revelation 9:11, it is personified as Abaddon, "Angel of the Abyss",[1] rendered in Greek as Apollyon; and he is described as king of the locusts which rose at the sounding of the fifth trumpet. In like manner, in Rev. vi. 8, Hades is personified following after death to conquer the fourth part of the earth.
locusts.. Smoke Monster?

I said why - Smoke Monster, Jacob, or SmokeMonsterJacob had a task to perform off the island. And then ... he wants to go back home, to the Island - using Hurley (or all of the Oceanic 6 - or appearing to all to increase his chances of getting one) to go back.

also.. all the Dharma stations are references to the god Apollo.. who was the god who could bring ill-health and plagues.

Oooooo AND there are the suspicious Apollo bars on the island that don't have the Dharma logo on them like everything else not to mention all the Apollo adds thrown in the background of different episodes. I sense another theme!
Maybe this means the Apollo bars aren't good for you or were distributed for the sole purpose of secretly infecting people with something?? Haha yah I know that was a bit of a stretch :)

Hmmm good one Free Bird. Anyhow I really may believe that that Attorney dude is a "vision" of the island, I think people are starting to get away from calling it the black smoke, due to its likliness to change forms, heck for all we know half of the island is a "vision", u just never know.

ALSO. Abaddon and Apollyon translate into THE DESTROYER.

That guy was definitely creepy enough to be linked to smokey, but I watched that scene in slow motion on darkUFO.com and I'm not convinced that it was smoke. It looks like just a shadow to me.. I don't know.. I'm open on this one..

Well....after watching "Confirmed Dead", I think it is safe to say that the "they" Abaddon speaks of when he asks Hurley (in the previous episode)
"Are they still alive?" are the four new characters and Naomi.

Why does the black smoke have to be Jacob? I think everyone thinks it is Jacob but I think it is something else. Remember how different Echo saw the smoke compared to Locke? Thank you for listening to me about the smoke Though2544!!!!!!!

Very, very, very good catch!!!! You have turned the tables on who he is referring to. I think you are spot on! Could be wrong, but I would say very likely, most likely, very much the freighter people he is inquiring about.

I thought the same thing. That guy is different. Hurley was very scared of him and I think Hurley is smarter than we think.
