Then read the introduction on this page:

Dr. Edgar Halowax, says that the 2 rabbits must not come into contact.
He also mentioned the casimir effect.

a few quotes:

"This is sometimes described in terms of virtual particles interacting with the objects, due to the mathematical form of one possible way of calculating the strength of the effect. Because the strength of the force falls off rapidly with distance, it is only measurable when the distance between the objects is extremely small." - Explaination of Casimir Effect

"Virtual particles exhibit some of the phenomena that real particles do, such as obedience to the conservation laws. If a single particle is detected, then the consequences of its existence are prolonged to such a degree that it cannot be virtual. Virtual particles are viewed as the quanta that describe fields of the basic force interactions, which cannot be described in terms of real particles. Examples of these are static force fields, such as a simple electric or magnetic fields, or any field that exists without excitations that result in its carrying information from place to place." - Description of the applicability of virtual particles

"The Casimir effect can also be computed using the mathematical mechanisms of functional integrals of quantum field theory, although such calculations are considerably more abstract, and thus difficult to comprehend. In addition, they can be carried out only for the simplest of geometries. However, the formalism of quantum field theory makes it clear that the vacuum expectation value summations are in a certain sense summations over so-called "virtual particles" - Description of the theories behind Casimir in Mathematics

The Valenzetti Equation is a sequence of numbers designed to predict the end of the world. If this number was unavoidable, then one would have to manipulate the number and extend the value of it.

The numbers: 4, 8, 15, 16, 23 and 42. The fact that they were directly referred to by Desmond in the show as "just saving the world" (actually a kelvin quote but I'm pretty sure we don't see him say it), brings up a serious question of how significant they will turn out be. Now consider the fact that everyone on the island seems to be linked one way or another, more so than six degrees of separation. And now the dharma project revealing elements of the casimir effect are present and playing with dimensional theories and time travel with the whole don't let them touch each other thing.

I get the feeling that there is a scientific link between the valenzetti equation and the properties of the island. Again marvin candle/edgar halowax states that the station is not what it seems and neither is the island. I think that dharma was trying to manipulate the numbers on the island through experimenting with its powers, and in doing this cause the island to react and produce the smoke monster, which could be as its put forth above, a combination of virtual particles, that once they have directly interacted with real particles can no longer be virtual.

As evidence, consider when Locke first sees the smoke monster. He says he saw a bright light and thought it was beautiful. When Mr. Eko saw looked into the smoke monster he saw something else. Something bad. Now consider the two past lives of these characters, one is filled with self destruction and chaos, the other is filled with adversity and hope. Locke after 4 years of being wheelchair was trying to go on a walkabout while think of the terrible thinks Mr. Eko achieved in that time.

I think the smoke monster is able to interact with them because it is a combination of virtual particles. These particles when close enough to real particle are acknowledge and therefore become real. The then physical state of the virtual/real particles could have the same effect on the enviroment around it as a true particle does. Thats how the smoke monster is able to appear to people as visions, such as Jacks dad in the first season. He sees him but he never interacts with him. However in the missing webisodes we see christian sheperd tell vincent he has work to do, the next scene is when jack sees vincent after waking up in the jungle. Walt tells locke he has work to do when locke is about to give, while yemi appears to eko and tells him to confess.

I think the smoke monster can manipulate its form into a projection of something inside people, something they value or that means a lot to them. Theres a greater explaination to why it chooses to interact with people but i feel it has something to do with the island itself and its judging of its occupants. More than that, look at the evidence of what happens when it becomes real to people. Locke saw it and in season 1 it tried to drag him underground. I do not think this was an attempt to kill Locke, as we saw it kill the pilot and Mr Eko quite visciously. I think it was trying to acquire Locke, perhaps bring it to Jacob.

Based on that we have seen i think it killed Mr Eko because it perceived him as a threat. When Locke and Mr Eko interacted with it, they made it function as a real particle. In this sense whenever it came into contact with them it would have to behave as such. It could still take on forms of other people, it could still produce the visions like when Mr Eko sees the men he killed and Locke sees Walt, but when it came within a certain distance it could no longer be a virtual particle. Therefore, it takes on the black smoke apparel and chooses whether to scare them away leave them be or kill them. This is futher explained when yemi visits Mr Eko's tent with a lighter then the tent burns down. If it had the ability to a virtual particle real when it came close enough to other real particles, its form would function as real.

Somehow this could explain Charlie's appearance in Episode 1 of Season 4. It could also account for Jack's Father in Through the Looking Glass. Jack sems like he is so wasted hes imaging his father being there. In reality, he is drinking and taking pills because those visions wont go away. In all honesty, the projection Kate is seeing might be the "he" that she was referring to, unaware that hurley and jack are experiencing the same.

Its trying to get them all to come back to the Island. But why? Maybe for the same reason it killed the pilot? If you think about it, how many other people did it honestly "randomly" attack bar him? Everyone else seems to be for a reason. The pilot must have been because he could have helped, or wasnt supposed to have survived. After all if the smoke monster is the Island, in some concious sense, wouldnt try to reverse the effect of the valenzetti equation itself? or is it course correction? Are the others really the good guys by trying to keep everyone off the Island who could affect it's exisistence? Is it possible all the events that planted the people on 815 in the first place were actually an intricate and elaborate plan to summon these people to the Island?

Casimir deals in quantum physics so its above my head but as an explination for all thats happened its pretty close to the mark. Particularly the presence of what we can assume is a highly dense electromagnetic field. And based on that video I'd say its significance will soon be explored.

Any thoughts?

WOW! You really hit the nail on the head of what I've been thinking I just didn't know how to get it out. I had originally posted a similar theory regarding the Casimir Effect but the one thing I was having trouble explaining was the smoke monster. That really makes soo much sense for the most part and I really think its a legitimate theory.

I agree with you on the Valenzetti Equation and I do think that possibly the Dharma Initiative's MAIN goal was to reverse it, stop the end of the world from happening. It makes perfect sense and I think through that they made a lot of mistakes, such as the supposed "incident" that happened. Maybe that "incident" they keep referring to was when smokie was born?

Great post, I'm curious to see what others think about it. Haha I feel like I have so much more to say but have no clue how to type it out lol :p Kudos to you Swerve!
