I need help to remember this because I think that it holds a bit of info for us. Does anyone remember when it was that Locke lost his ability to walk on the island and what the circumstances were when it happened? I also don't remember if it was just the one time or more. I think that it may be important to help figure out how Jacob is thinking. Maybe he took this away from Locke because Locke did something he was annoyed with. Help...???

I know he's lost the ability to walk multiple times.
But one instance was when he and Boone found Yemi's plane. Locke couldn't walk so Boone had to climb up to the plane. As we know Boone ended up dying, so maybe Locke's inability to walk was the islands attempt to save him.

Didn't he have problems when he was in the pit of dead Dharma people? Maybe that was to tell him that Ben was setting him up along with Horace.

Yep, when he was shot he had trouble getting up - until he saw Walt.

Thank you, a big help. So then Jacob is certainly manipulating Locke throughout. Hmm. So maybe I am right then that Jacob was waiting for Locke to lose his obsession with knives before he started to reveal himself. That knife was like poison when child Locke picked it in front of Richard. Locke's personality has been changing while on the island. From big time hunter to more of a leader.
If anyone else remebers other incidents please post them. Thanks again.

If you do find the Island ask it if I can come too. I'll play any role it wants me to play.

I never thought of it that way before but it makes sense!

If that's the case then why did Walt appear to Locke, subsequently causing Locke to throw a knife into Naomi's back? Plus, in many ways Locke became a leader because of his hunting skills and the ability to provide food for everyone.
I guess I just don't see what's so wrong with the knife - and I don't buy the whole anti-violence thing on the part of the island. After all, it was Richard and company who purged all of Dharma...

I'm working on a few thoughts just now. Bare with me. I think it was definitely important and it sure seemed to be the wrong choice. Richard was totally negative saying that he wasn't ready yet and ran out so fast! I think that when Locke was in the pit with the Dharma bodies and didn't want to move it was more that he wanted to die. Walt appeared to him and gave him a pep talk. He believed that his mission wasn't done. I don't think that was the same thing I'm thinking about. Locke's personality went from hunter to leader. Remember, he never was really much of a hunter but more that he was stalking around instead. When Locke killed Naomi it was for the good of the island. It wasn't just Locke's "tough" attitude like when he was teaching Walt to throw knives. I'll let you know if this thought pans out into anything really interesting. I think it may.

Maybe Locke has to continue to do the things the "island" wants for the continuity of the island otherwise he will die. Maybe that is what him becoming the best person he can be is, is that he is bargaining for his paralysis to be extinguished by doing things the island needs.
When he gets closer to not allowing fate to work, his paralysis starts to come back?

Well actually, I'm thinking more along the lines of Locke having to ascend to the level of Shaman.

Agreed. The island is grooming him for a higher position.

I'm pretty sure when Locke was in the pit he couldn't move his legs and he couldn't get up as a result. I specifically remember him moving his legs with his arms. Whether or not thats the same things is questionable, but I'm pretty sure he was "paralyzed" again.
I think lost_in_iowa is right, it seems that when Locke's faith in the island is lost he loses the ability to walk.

True Ort. Maybe the island (Jacob not the physical island) isn't grooming him so much as it is awaiting him to be ready to accept it. I'm just trying to solidify my thoughts about Dreamtime even more and that includes Locke's ascent to Shaman. It does make sense.

If I remember correctly every time Locke doubts himself and has a setback, he losses his faith, and start back feeling sorry for himself again, that's when he loses his ability to walk. That why I think the island can heal some such as Locke, and Rose. But not the ones who don't have faith such as Jack.
