I think all the islanders are a new legion of guardian angels . . . in training. I think that is why some get to go back to the "real" world.

This could be true but I thought anything to do with purgatory has been refuted?

There is an archangel Michael in biblical theology. There are actually references to all their names in theology if we try to uncover historical meanings to the character's names.

The island could be a dimension not necessarily, between death and being alive, but maybe some kind of loop to change all their fates if they are trying to die......i'm confusing myself.
