Okay, it looks like the freighter is gonna blow. This means they get off the island some other way. Pretend the Losties on the freighter realize theres no way to defuse the C-4 and evacuate the freighter and return to the island. We see the Losties returning home in a Coast Guard plane. How do they get on that plane! Remember back when Kate, Jack, and Sawyer were captured by the others. Kate and Sawyer are working their asses off with the Others moving rocks,etc. Someone, I believe Jack, ask Julliette, "Why are we moving all these rocks?" Julliette says, "They are building a runway," Jack says, for what," Jullliette laughs and says, for the U.F.O.'s! What if she was only kidding about the U.F.O. part. What if the Others had prior knowlage of the Coast Guard plane comming an really were building a runway. Now the question is, Why! To help the Losties? For themselves? I'll let ya'll speculate on this a while, then I'll come back later, to see what ya'll think.

I cannot imagine under what circumstances the Others would build a runway for a plane than was coming to rescue people that included some of which they were holding captive.

It is possible that they were told my Jacob to build a runway, without a known reason why.

Given the way events unfolded, I doubt the runway was ever finished.
