View Full Version : Why didn't Jack and Kate make a Logical Assumption?

After the pilot has landed and said "Are you Jack" he says he lost his satellite phone. The when Jack and Kate offer him their satellite phone he seemed rather surprise that they would have one.

Why weren't Kate and Jack suspicious that he didn't know they had a phone, if he had known they called with one, and he was one a supposed mission to rescue them?

On a side note, Why Do you think the Metal container that they found in the jungle had gas masks inside? Did they know that the original Dharma Initiative got murdered that way in the purge and wanted to be prepared.

Maybe someone else flew the helicopter off the Island. Didn't Syaid(sp?) seem to know a little about the helicopter? Maybe they flew it out of there and left the new people on the Island.

I bet sayid hot wired that dam bird and was going to go on a joyride. I think he'd want to go around the island to get a high up view b4 heading out. They need more fuel though.

In the first EVER episode, didnt Jack say to Kate he took a few Pilot lessons once, and said it wasn't for him???

perhaps the gas masks were due to them thinking the island may still have 'the sickness' on it?

i am not sure if he knows that naomi is dead so maybe thats why he is surprised? might be totally making that up though!

Don't overanalyze this one. Remember that Naomi was the last one to use the phone, not Kate or Jack. So he would not have expected them to have her phone.

yeah the possibility of another purge seems obvious... bring back the Oceanic 6 and kill the rest. If I was Kate or Jack I would hold on to the gas mask just in case...

Another thing as mentioned by GriffinCloverfield, when Dan ask Jack " are you Jack?" (he also call him Jack on the phone) this seems a bit odd, if you watch Through the Looking Glass and and The Beginning of the End you should see that at no point Jack actually gives his name, all he says is that he's one of the survivor or Oceanic flight 815, unless we should assume that they discuss a bit more "off air" but that would be a first in LOST.

So it looks like the "rescue" crew already know who everyone is, supported by the fact that they know Juliette was not on the plane. So they came for Ben but are fully aware of the list of people on the island.

Are you sure? I can't rewatch the scene right now, but according to the transcripts on lostpedia, this is what goes down:

JACK: Who is this?
MINKOWSKI: Who is this?
JACK: My name is Jack Shephard. Are you, are you on the boat, the freighter?
MINKOWSKI: How'd you get this channel?
JACK: Naomi, Naomi told us about your search team. About the boat.
MINKOWSKI: Naomi. You found her? Where is she? Who are you?
JACK: I'm one of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Can you get a fix on our location?

Well, Jack did tell the people on the freighter that his name was Jack. But there seems to be some sort of communications protocol that links the phones to the ship and not to the other phones.

Not only did the metal box have gas masks inside there were containers marked with bio-hazard symbols. I am surprised that nobody has metioned this or gone back to see just exactly what is in that box and ask the Fantastic Four exactly what in the hell is going on. The survivors have the guns, but certainly seem reluctant to use them to threaten the FF. Are they so blind to the idea of the freighter and possible rescue that they have all got their heads up their butts?

Also, one of them looked at Kate and called her Kate, I don't recall them ever introducing Kate to them.

I noticed that too but then I went back and watched it and right before Miles calls her Kate, Jack had said something like "Stay back Kate" and thats when Miles goes, "you must be kate!"

Kate tells them her name when she's on the phone.. They call just before she finds Naomi (right before Naomi dies) and the guy on the phone says "who's this?" and Kate says "This is Kate".

Remember what The pilot Frank said? He said this below
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Juliet tends to Frank's wounds]

FRANK: Look as bad as it feels?

JULIET: How bad does it feel?

FRANK: [Laughs] What's your name again?

JULIET: Juliet.

FRANK: Juliet. Juliet what?

JULIET: Juliet Burke.

FRANK: Juliet Burke. You weren't on that plane, were you?

[Juliet pauses]

FRANK: Miles!

MILES: Yeah?

FRANK: This is Juliet, and she was not on the plane.

MILES: What? You sure?

FRANK: You know how many times I studied that damn manifest? Believe me there's no Juliet Burke on that plane. She's a native.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
So they did have a manifest and this would be how they know everyone by name. Perhaps maybe not by face. But they get pretty much the idea of who they are.

You're right about the manifest, but either way, Kate and Jack both TELL the people on the phone what their names are.

Maybe you guys should watch the episodes again?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Yes both Kate and Jack tell MINKOWSKI their names.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kate in episode "The begining of the end"

KATE: Hello.

MINKOWSKI: Who's this?

KATE: Er, this is Kate.

MINKOWSKI: You with Jack?

KATE: No no, he's not here.

MINKOWSKI: Where's Naomi?

KATE: We're looking for her.

MINKOWSKI: What do you mean, you're looking for her?

[Kate ends the call. Blood drips onto her arm. Kate looks up to see Naomi dive down onto her with a knife. She holds it to Kate's throat]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
And Jack did in episode "Threw the looking Glass"

[The phone is answered]

MAN: Minkowski. Hello?

[Jack puts it to his ear]

JACK: Who is this?

MINKOWSKI: Who is this?

JACK: My name is Jack Shephard. Are you, are you on the boat, the freighter?

MINKOWSKI: How'd you get this channel?

[Locke can be seen leaving the area]

JACK: Naomi, Naomi told us about your search team. About the boat.

MINKOWSKI: Naomi. You found her? Where is she? Who are you?

JACK: I'm one of the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815. Can you get a fix on our location?

MINKOWSKI: Hell yeah we can. Sit tight. We'll be right there.

[Everyone share grins and shrieks with happiness as Jack and Kate look at each
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can rest in peace now. Your not crazy. lol
