A couple of ideas that popped into my head...
1) The island is some kind of humanitarian project by the Dharma people. It is largely mechanical and omits some kind of positive radiation that promotes healing, or something along those lines.
2) The island is Atlantis, which was never consumed by angry gods, but hidden away from the world until humankind was worthy of using the power for something more than killing each other. Atlantis was meant to be some kind of Utopian civilisation with knowledge more advanced than we have, even to this day...
The second is just what I would do if I was writing the show.
Let me know what you guys think...
