I don't know if anyone has discussed this yet, but I'm thinking that the polar bear found in the desert may be another Oceanic Airlines crash site. It seems the airline may have a tie to the Dharma Initiative, and it was transporting the "experiments" off of the island. After the polar bear was found in the desert, Oceanic couldn't let another bit of evidence be released to connect the two, so they covered up the crash of flight 815...Keeping people off of their scent. That would also explain why this "rescue" crew may have been assembled. It is a group of people who know that something is wrong with the story behind 815, so they were chosen to go together and fail, never to come back. Thus keeping the cover up covered up...Let me know what you think!

You lost me with "transporting experiments off the island..."

This would also explain who "they" are when Matthew Abaddon asks Hurley if "they" are still alive...

A polar bear was found in the desert...The one Charlotte found a Dharma collar on. The Dharma Initiative was experimenting on these polar bears.

Yeah, I understand that.

But are you saying Flight 815 was transporting polar bears somewhere?

EDIT: Or are you saying that Oceanic in general was using its planes to transport Dharma stuff around?

No...not necessarily, Flight 815 may have been just accidental or the work of someone on the island, but the media stir surrounding it was causing to much attention that could throw a wrench into the gears of whatever it is that Oceanic and Dharma had in common, so they covered it up. I'm not saying I know what they have in common, I'm just saying its obvious they do.

I'm also saying that the polar bear in the desert was from a different Oceanic Flight that may have gone down...I think you get that point, but I just wanted to make sure.

Exactly...

I don't think Dharma would need to contract out their transportation like that. We know Hanso started Dharma and that Hanso is a VERY well funded and connected foundation - they do own a nuclear sub, afterall.

I think Oceanic 815 was an accident (in fact, we know it was because Desmond caused it) and the plane in the trench is the work of Hanso trying to cover up the Island.

I can only see 1 of the 4 characters seeing something wrong with the crash. What about the other 3?

You're speculating that Dharma wouldn't need to contract out. Does it ever say that Dharma had its own airline??? How did the Dharma folks get on the island in the first place? Which airline? Do we know that Hanso was not also connected with Oceanic Airlines. Who dropped in the food and supplies??? You're making me reach for stuff now, but wierder things have happened on this show.

Of course. This is all speculation.

But I think it makes sense that a foundation that could obtain a nuclear sub wouldn't need to use a commerical airline company to transport stuff for them.

Dharma doesn't need to own an airline, just an airplane, which is entirely possible.

And we saw the Dharma folds arrive by boat in Ben's flashback.
