If he truly cannot go back, his plan is to help gather the people who can and kick their butts in the right direction.

One thing we've seen from Cuse and co. is that they've been known to change their mind about stuff. Usually not in the same episode though.

I think Ben lied to Locke, think about it...submarine is blown up, various Dharma stations destroyed and the conventional teleporting machine must be destroyed to access the wheel. Doesn't leave the Others with any of their previous covert ways to leave the island as far as we know. Seems to me that Ben knew one way or another the island must be saved but realised if John turned the wheel he would be stuck with Richard and the Others (neither of whom seem to like him anymore) also moving the island would probably cut it off from any air or sea contact again for years. I think Ben wanted to frighten Locke by over exaggerating. I mean if Locke were stuck in the real world again he probably wouldn't be able to walk, Ben wanted his place so he could have a chance to get back at Widmore within the next decade lol:)
