The English chemist and physicist Michael Faraday, b. Sept. 22, 1791, d. Aug. 25, 1867, is known for his pioneering experiments in electricity and magnetism. Many consider him the greatest experimentalist who ever lived. Several concepts that he derived directly from experiments, such as lines of magnetic force, have become common ideas in modern physics.
Faraday's discovery (1845) that an intense magnetic field can rotate the plane of polarized light is known today as the Faraday effect. The phenomenon has been used to elucidate molecular structure and has yielded information about galactic magnetic fields.
Continuing the family tradition?

May not actually be related, but I think you are right on with why they named him and why he's there.

I dont think that they're related but i think thats where they got the name from, the writers for Lost like to use names that related to the characters beliefs, such as John Locke really famous Philosopher and Jacob from the Bible.

james...i found that info on faraday's disc when i was looking up shattering of light....it was interesting and i think that the writers are so gifted that they r always putting things in like that.....i still want to know what daniel meant when he was talking about how the light scattered.....there is something to that...ya know

Yep, Faraday's comment about how light scatters caught my attention and I think it's going to be a big part of the "answer/s". His name caught my attention too. I knew the historical Faraday was a scientist but didn't recall his field or contributions. The more I read, the more it seems to tie in.

He also, I believe, discovered capacitance, as the measuring unit is named after him- the "farad". Capacitance is the ability of a conductive material to store an electrical charge.

Faraday's Law is kinda important to electromagnetic physics.
Electromagnetic physics is kinda important to the weirdness of the island.
I'm thinking this is no coincidence.
