OK so we are rewatching the first season and I'm not too sure if we are going to do it here or on the Gen Dis. board. I think we were talking about doing on either Wed or Thur but since X-mas already has his season four thread set up for thurs I think we should do it on Wed.

Yey! I'm first! ;)
Ok, Bouttte, carrying this out from the Other thread...
Yes, I was thinking you'd likely bring that up about the camara cuts and Jack's "jumps". It was recently discussed somewhere else here on the dark side, but we can continue it if you have ideas.
I did pay close att'n, but I honestly do not think that at that point in the show (quite new) the writers would even expect anyone to pick up on any of that, had it actually meant something. And, unless I'm wrong, no one did (at that time). Also, Jack WAS on the plane, so it would be unlikely that he did some sort of simultanous time hopping. I really think heads started going crazy when someone theorized that the piece of bamboo next to Jack was Ben's baton.
As for the shoe, still think it was simply an omen. Something to give us that queezy feeling of things to come.

Good point. Sometimes I forget that when these episodes were being aired neither the viewers nor the producers knew how things were going to pan out. But TPTB did say that the big clue was in the first episode and every one missed it so I tended to look for stuff I missed the first nine times I watched it.

While I'm waiting for you to come back, I will toss out one thing that isn't exactly important... You know how everyone got suspicious of Nathan (or was it Ethan) when he emerged on the scene and wasn't at all wet? How come no one questioned Jack when HE was not wet?? Wouldn't it have been plausible that Ethan had been thrown into the trees just like Jack?

Most of them were pretty much dry. I think. One other thing that struck me was that it seems like Vincent was being set up to be more important than we've seen since the first few episodes. again this could be a case of the show being new and not having a firm direction yet. On the other hand we've seen things seemingly be forgotten about only to pop up again at a later date. You just never know when your being lead astray.

Boutte, I watched the first entire disc, so I don't exactly remember if this was on epi 2 or later, so sorry, but here I go with a thought, nonetheless...
How about maybe that "big clue" was more having to do with JOHN rather than with Jack? They panned a very nice shot focusing in on John's expression standing there like he was one with the island right from the get go, with what they wanted to look like a "menacing" countenance... you know that frame I'm talking about? Where Locke squints sort of and looks off like something's up?... How did that set with you?
I, for one, did not feel at all threatened. The focus may very well have been to show us this was primarily about LOCKE, but to ME, John still had that certain Ghandi-ness about him that made me feel safe and trusting with him.
You?

Yeah I pretty much had the impression that Locke was a sort of wise man figure right from the start. Although when he started to get friendly with Walt and Michael got suspicious of him I was afraid he was going to be a pedophile or something.

Yes, and there are just so many areas we could focus on. I quite honestly never, until I read stuff in this forum, even thought about Vincent being important. Like relating to when he's around or not around, the bad or good things that happen.
You know, it's rather hard to believe that the writers actually said that THEY don't even know where the storyline will go from one script to the next... come on... if they didn't have a master plan, they could NEVER draw all the coincidences together to make such a phenominal show, you know?...
So, did you feel Vincent was significant in the first epi's?

Ha! Yeah, that's something that occurs in the back of our minds, I think, just because we naturally tend to guard all children, but that would have been just too creepy a thing to have on this show. Besides, John did keep a physical distance of a sort when he became aware that Michael was uncomfortable about him being around Walt. He did try to respect this. It was Walt who went back to talk with John, right? Not John after that.

I think they were suspicious of Nathan being dry because the tail section landed in the water. The middle section didn't land in the water and everyone was pretty much dry.

I think he's going to be important eventually. Have you ever seen the little snippets they have on the ABC site called Missing pieces? (or Lost Pieces or something like that) They're pieces of the show that wound up being edited out. Originally the first thing you were going to see was vincent in the forest. The next you saw was Christian standing in forest in his suit, he tells Vincent "Go wake up my son. He has work to do." Vincent then runs to where Kack is laying and then we see what turned to be the original opener when we saw Jacks eye.

NO!!!! I didn't know that at all!!! wow!!! No, the only edits I have are the cut scenes on the discs... like Ben and Alex where he tells her he might be dying and she vehemently defies him and he just sits there sort of pouting.
No, I never even heard of Missing Pieces. And why would they give us these snippets, anyway?

Hey, Locke. Nathan was tall, dark hair, and beard. The show made it seem like he was the spy, and Ana-Lucia threw him into the pit that Michael, Jin and Sawyer were thrown into.

Yes, Nathan was actually on the plane. Goodwin killed Nathan because he was afraid Ana-Lucia would soon realize that he (Nathan) wasn't the spy, and would possibly suspect Goodwin.

Yeah, really. I didn't even find him (Sawyer) attractive because he was so unattractive on the inside and acted so unbecoming toward the rest who were in dire distress. His character definitely grew the most, IMO. (Hey, I got to say IMO!)

Haha, "It's a rescue plan, Yay, we're saved!" That was great.
I had a feeling I would enjoy his one-liners, but not the character, necessarily. Whether you like him or not, I did enjoy his contrast to the other survivors. There is always one in the crowd.

You know when I had a "big WOW" ? When I saw Boutte in his tux the first time! (and the second, and the third, and ... )
ok, back to the subject at hand. Epi 1, scene whatever, season 1 CLAP
I think the phenomenal way the creators put the show together from the first shot of Jack's eye opening (and the reflection of the palm tree in his pupil, what a touch!) was what made this show a BIG WOW. The viewer only hears what Jack hears, only sees what Jack sees... this wow draws us in completely engrossed from the get go. OH, YEAH, BIG BIG WOW!
and from the quietude of the jungle to the sudden shot of utter panic, Shannon standing there in hysterics, the guy getting sucked into the engines
... yes, big wow for television! And then... yeah... that dinosaur sounding thing from the jungle sucking trees into the bowels of the earth... WTF, right?

Ok Episode One...
Starts with an eye.....a recurance we have seen a lot.

Note...I forgot how much I love the scene when Jack and Kate meet. The story he tells....awwww
Ok, Im on vacation, so thats why my post is short, Ill post a longer examination on Monday! Later!

I've heard several people mention that book. What's it about?
It's about a detective that solves a murder mystery. It has nothing to do with Lost
but there are references to Widmore (actually some of the characters are Widmores)
and Paik.

The guy who got sucked into the engine was Gary Troup, the author of the book "Bad Twin" (which isnt to bad if you havent read it).
Wow, that's odd. I am reading through the LOST book list (lostpedia) and I just read that book. I logged in to do a search on Gary Troup. It is a good book and a easy read. Much easier than Our Mutual Friend by Dickens (852 pages written in 1864). If you are thinking of going through the LOST book list start with this one.

Hey guys, I just got finished with the first four episodes, and I don't get what you are saying about sawyer, I mean, I know he's got a pretty bad attitude, but still, he is compassionate and charring! I mean, he almost cries in the first few episodes. he's rough around the edges, but I think that anyone would be if you had such a bad life fallowing you around. and as for the inhaler incident, well, can you blame him? that's the second time someone had been through his stash! if boune thought that he had the inhaler, the first thing to do would be to ask him, not start going through his stuff! I mean, if I had found boune doing that with my stuff. he would have not gotten away so easy!

I haven't read through every post in this thread, sorry. But, I have read some mention out how strange it is that Jack is so far into the jungle. The cockpit was pretty far into the jungle, so I don't fine too strange. I've also read that people have speculated that maybe Jack wasn't on the plane. i believe he was. Cindy gave him a couple bottles of booze (gin or vodka) while he was on the plane. In the jungle he pulls one out of his pocket.

I was thinking about the first episodes and suddenly thought about the monster in the jungle and the food that people are eating. Does the monster attack people more if they haven't eaten island food? Did Eko eat mostly DHARMA food? Everyone is eating mangos and drinking water all of the time.
Remember when claire eats the urchin from Jin and the baby kicks, do you think that things were on hold for her or something until she ate island food?
Who else encounters smokey and survives? Locke, he ate a pig.
Just thinking.

What I thought was very strange was when Charlie is standing there and that big flaming thing lands right next to him and he doesn't even flinch.
Another is the way Jack walks out of the jungle and looks right and doesn't see or hear anything and looks to the left and all this stuff is going on. Wouldn't you look to the left first because you would hear all of that? Strange.

Charlie flinched, you just couldn't see it!:D and then there is the fact that he was hi AND he had adrenalin pumping through his body, it can make you kinda dizzy don't you think?
and as for Jack, I was impaired by what he was drinking on the plain, you know, the drinks he was getting from the stewardess. and he had adrenalin pumping through his body! so it can be kinda hard to find what you are looking for, esp when it is that loud a problem, its had to tell where a sound is coming form outside, plus, the louder it gets, the harder it is to find, if it is not close by.

Oh, man, I am sorry to run 3 consecutive posts like this, but just thought of something else about Jack I don't particularly like. In first epi, don't you think he should have simply said to a concerned Boone, "Here, tip her head back like this" instead of taking the time to smart off at the kid about his needing to go back and retake his lifeguard cpr class (or something like that)?
Yes, I know Jack was running around like a maniac himself trying to save/help the injured, but under those circumstances which required short simple commands, I just think it was an arrogant remark to make to poor Boone. Then when Boone offered to collect pens, Jack STILL had an arrogant look on his face when he responded, "Yeah, you go do that..."
Sometimes Jack has no bedside manner at all...

I am sorry, but I have to disagree, if boon made that mistake once, he would make it twice. and if he will make it twice, that is another time he is putting someone in danger because he doesn't know how to handle the situation. I have to side with Jack on this one (and I tend not to side with him, so that is huge if you ask me.)

I'm not sure what you mean by Charlie being in the fusolage? Was it the same stewardess? There are a few stewardesses on a flight. Jack wasn't as far into the jungle as the pilot in the cockpit. And we don't know that Jack was the only one that deep in the into the jungle. Hw may have been the only survivor. There could be many bodies strewn all over the jungle. Bernard in the tree. It was a plane crash. People and plane go everywhere in any condition.

Yes, I see your point, but if you watch episode two, you will see Charlie runing through the plane, all the way to the cockpit, where he pulls himself into the bathroom, the two people knocking on the door are a man, and a woman, the woman being the stewardess that was at the back of the plain in season two. when the plain starts to ratell, Charlie evacuates the bathroom and takes a seat in the front.

Anton, the stewerdess' name is Cindy, and the reason she was in the back of the plane while Charlie was in coach (the fuselodge) is because on an Airplane, particularly one the size of 815, the remaining flight attendants have their own seats located at the back of the plane. She was making them aware of Charlie's situation because he was having meth withdrawls while he was in the air, and I guess Cindy didn't want Charlie to freak out and disrupt everybody's flight... little did Cindy know that Charlie would be the least of everyone's worries during the flight.
Nickatine
07-08-2008, 06:36 AM
To further explain... Cindy was in the tail section during the crash for the same reason that she was in the tail section when she warned the other attendants (the man that you are reffering to who is knocking on the bathroom door) about the whole Charlie situation. That is where the designated area is for her to be during an emergency. That is where the flight attendants emergency equipment, food, and seats are located on the airplane.

Thank you Nick, that does clear up allot, but you didn't really help me with charlie, if you re-watch episode 2 you will see that Charlie runs to the very front of the plain, all the way to first class, when he exits the bath-room, he is almost hit by a food cart, he dodges and finds a seat t word's the back of first class, so what was he doing in the mid section of the plain? thank you for clearing up the Cindy problem (although there was no need to remind me of her name) I didn't know where the flight attendant's seats were, sorry.:(

No apology neccessary Anton. Charlie ran out of the bathroom and like you said found a seat towards the end of first class. When the plane crashed, it broke into three parts. The cockpit, where Jack, Charlie, and Kate went in the first episode, and the gravesite of the pilot thanks to smokey. The tail section, where Anna-Lucia, Mr. Ecko, Libby, Cindy, and Bernard (who I'm sure was using the bathroom located at the end of the plane) were at. And what you are reffering to as the fuselodge, which is not just composed of the middle section of the plane (or the coach section) it was actually split apart at a point where some of the back rows of first class (where Charlie was) and some front rows of the tail section (close to where Kate was located) were included in this massive chunk of the plane. It's very intriquite how everything takes form on this show, but hopefully that explains a little bit of it for you.

Hmmm, a little, I get what you are saying, what puzzle's me, is how is it that charly happened to me in one of the few seats from first class that stayed with the the center, what is wearied to me is that in the first episode the had to climb all the way up a huge chunk of the plain (which I see as the hole first class portion to the plain, I could be wrong, but its just weared that charly would be in the center portion of the plain. thanks for trying to help me figure this out, we will have to talk some more, if we can find each other!

*Season 5 Episode 1*
We start the season off with Charlie in harms way during the crash, and Desmond finds a way to harness his time travelling ability due to the high exposure to electromagnetic energy, and picks Charlie up within a split second and places him safely in the middle of the plane where he will not have the same fate as the pilot and other passengers towards the front of the plane. This allows Desmond to manipulate Charlie in season 3 when he tells him he's going to die in the looking glass, so Widmore's boat can make it to the island. We then figure out that Desmond is Widmore's time travelling spy, using Desmond as a puppet in the past, present, and future... Sorry, kind of went off the deep end, but I just ran with it...

Yes! When I rewatched that one, I had wished I'd mentioned that to whomever it was who told me I was being too hard on Sawyer's first half of LOSTIE life. Reviewing this, I do think this was an act of bravery, not part of his death wish. These are little odds and ends I'd forgotten about. He wasn't all that bad, I guess.

I was actually thinking that very thing. The bear was difinitely a Wow moment. Locke and the one side light and one side dark wasn't so much of a Wow but it certainly resonates as a very significant one. Was he allready beginning to get some kind of a vibe? Obviously he knew that something special was happening because he could suddenly walk again. Jack, Charly and Kate had run across the monster so they knew something unusual was on the Island but no hint of good and evil forces.

Obviously he knew that something special was happening because he could suddenly walk again. Jack, Charly and Kate had run across the monster so they knew something unusual was on the Island but no hint of good and evil forces.
Yeah, that light/dark side thing... IDK, sort of just Locke's usual lockieness, I think. lol ... although... it WAS Walt he addressed... hmmm...
But at that point on the island, I think John was just really really feeling he was finally in his element, not so much thinking about the significance of what would come ( like in the near future with the two forces, Ben/Widmore) etc...

I'm glad you're hear because I keep noticing stuff and it's nice to have some one to talk to about it. Like when Sawyer says to Kate, "I know your type." and Kate says I'm not so sure. I think he pretty much had her pegged.
I was terrible at math in school but in the real world I seem to be able to figure out practical math problems better than most people. If it involves complicated algebra or something I'm helpless though.

Why do you feel Sawyer had her pegged?

I guess it isn't really necessary to put your quote in here if we're the only ones on this thread, but... lol anyway, yeah, we have learned A LOT more about them all since the beginning!
About Kate, I think she sincerely couldn't choose between Jack and Sawyer - I don't think she was playing any games. And also note that she never once slept with Jack when they were all on the island.
I do think, however, that she has always struggled with what she wanted to be vs what she believed herself to be - and Sawyer was, in part, a representation of that "lower" life she wanted to escape from but never really could. Could that be what Sawyer meant??
Here'sLOCKEing at you,Kid

I mean that Kate fought her feelings because Sawyer was too much like what she always wanted to get away from. But Sawyer was being honest with himself, unlike Kate.

I think that Sawyer new who Kate was, she knew how to handle a gun, she never even came close to making me think any different. she didn't do anything that looked in-character for someone that doesn't know how to handle a gun

The hard part would be remembering the number of iterations. Also estimating the length of the message . All while a bunch of people are yelling back and forth at each other. It's not impossible but not many people could do it.

A good For-instance, is the fact that she had an almost perfect 'single-hand grip' on the gun, she pulled the slide back without any effort, and she still had the gun pointing at Sawyer in a threatening manner when she was pretending that she thought there was no ammo in the gun.

Speaking of that gun, it's a 9mm of some sort. I wonder if you could really take out a 1200 to 1500 pounds polar bear with it. You might be able to inflict a mortal wound but could you drop him in his tracks like that?

NO, absolutely not, a pistole is barely able to take out a deer, even if you are shooting in the right place, a pistol just doesn't have enough kick, thats why I am always surprised when they are pulling out pistols instead of rifles!

In the Guiness book of world recorsds it says the largest land carnvore (in other words not counting elephants and rhinos) ever killed was a 14 foot 1700 lb polar bear. He was killed with one shot from a .357 magnum pistol. The guy waited till it was within 10 feet and had reared up on his back legs to deliver a swipe with his paws. The guy shot him in the heart. I think the guy who shot him should have been the record holder for the biggest balls in the world.

And now that I think about it how did she get to Australia? It seem like it would be pretty hard for some one who's being chased by the FBI to get on an international flight.
This is the episode where Jack starts turning into a dick. Yelling at people because the marshal is dieing. Meanwhile Saiid is getting people organized and being a natural leader. Why is Jack the leader?

Ok, first thing I noticed is what everyone else already caught; that Charlie told Jack he couldn't swim when Jack runs in to save a drowning woman.
How come Charlie said that?
Second thing: I do think Christian is undead... he disappears at times when Jack doesn't take his eyes off him that he could run off. But it's unexplainable why, if the image was Christian's ghost, he doesn't say anything. I think Jacob/Smokie was taking the form of Christian, just like when he did Walt when Walt was safely back in the states.

Hey Locke I'm late but I'm here.
A couple things to say (well more than a couple.)
First thing is Jack is a Dick but he's not a coward and he has a strong conviction to his morals.
Why DID Charlie say he couldn't swim? Was it a mistake on the part of the producers?
While they later tried to make Shannon a slightly more sympathetic figure she is actually a horrible human being. She does all the things that men hate from a woman.
Claire on the other hand is a true sweetheart.
Boone asks Jack "Who appointed you the saviour?", Good question.
Christian couldn't have been a worse father or role model if he was a crack addict bank robber.
When Jack was chasing Christian through the jungle was Christian trying to lead him over the cliff or to the caves?
Were the porcelain dolls fin the cave from the wreck or were they already there?
When Jack freaks out and destroys the coffin is when I first started to doubt him as a rational, in control human being.

too much to comment on tonight, but for now... let me just add that I was always puzzled by Christian's comments to his young son... never got that. I think he was a jerk. I am an adult and I didn't understand him, how could he expect a little kid to? And I just didn't like his attitude toward fellow human beings. What was he trying to teach Jack, anyway? weirdo...

I'm not sure what to think about what Chistian was up to. He was getting Jack all riled up and Dumbass charges at him and allmost gets killed falling off the cliff. It's almost like Christian wanted him to fall.
Christians character confuses me. Aside from the dead/not dead thing It seems like they're to rehabilitate his character somewhat. He was difinitely portrayed as a POS in the early episodes but now he seems to be trying help Claire and the rest of the losties. It seems like the writers are still trying to figure out what to do with him.

Ok, I'm back, Boutte, for a bit here. I was really too tired to respond any more last night after that great evening in the barma. But I have just a couple more things to add...
First, yeah, that was totally ridiculous of Jack to chop apart the coffin in a fit of...what was that? Rage? It didn't look like fear or denial. Just out of control rage.
Second, playing the devils advocate here, in defense of Shannon, I have to say that sometimes we have to make allowances for youth. She couldn't be much more than 20 or so. Having been told all her life that she was worthless and couldn't do anything on her own, being ignored and denied the chance to go to Paris to ballet school, having a wicked stepmother, all of this served to break her spirit and so, reacting as a person with not the maturity to handle it, she decided to play the part that was set up for her. Only then was when she turned into a shrew. Yes, she was a snot to most of the Losties, but later even Shannon grew (ok, just a little, maybe). The thing I didn't like, however, was pairing her up later with Sayid. :confused:WHAT?
That was the most mismatched pair they could have put together. Sayid is clearly not a womanizer and is always portrayed as a very together sort of person. There is not one single thing he could have actually fallen in love with Shannon over. Not one. Yet, there they were.

Not one. Yet, there they were.
not 1? i'm afraid lockey u r looking at it from a woman point :)

He lived in Wash or Or. before moving to the Island with his father. We don't know what his connection to Tunisia and Iraq was yet. But he wasn't from there.

I was reading a few pages of your thread and thought if it was okay I'd like to join in. I have also been rewatching the entire series again, in fact I'm on my second go-round and still on season one.
I am watching this time with a different perspective on it all. I am trying to keep a realist perspective to explain the unexplainable and mysterious. So far, it does work. With regard to Christian, when Jack first saw him he was admittedly suffering from the shock of the crash, sleep deprivation and dehydration. Jack himself said that these things bring on hallucinations. I really tend to believe that Jack hallucinated Christian the entire time, at least at this point.
His flashbacks are also an important clue. It seems that everytime one of the characters is having flashbacks it is absolutely relative to what is going on with them on island time. Jack was trying to deal with the death of his father, the plane crash, the pressure of many survivors wanting him to become the leader and shear exhaustion and dehydration all at the same time. All this aside from performing his phsician duties! His flashbacks related to his father pushing him and trying to teach him about leadership, among other things and Jack's difficulty with pleasing his father and taking a stand as an individual. Obviously, Jack has issues with trying to save everyone probably it is a reaction within himself opposite to his fathers teachings because that is who Jack is. Anyway, with all of the turmoil on the island and the turmoil in Jack's head I really think that he hallucinated Christian. The sneaker on the tree next to Jack in the Pilot 1 was probably supposed to belong to Christian. No doubt, it did. The hallucinated Christian had both sneakers on.
Then, miraculously, after Jack's encounter with Christian, his flashbacks about his fathers teachings of leadership and finding the water and the cave, he rejoins the group and finally accepts becoming the group leader. This was something he clearly was opposed to beforehand. It was like an awakening within Jack. He just knew what he had to do and came to terms with it.
So, at this moment, I think Jack definitely hallucinated Christian. I reserve the right to change my opinion at any time!!! LOL!!!!

Welcome to the discussion NotSoLost.
I think Christian will be explained when they show the clip (Can't remember where I saw it) in which Marvin Candle creates a duplicate rabbit by moving the original forward in time. Some to do exotic matter or anti-matter. The bug in that theory is that Christians body wasn't in the coffin.

Thank you! I don't think that Christian not being in the coffin is really a "bug" in this theory though. If you look at it rationally, his body could have easily been thrown from the coffin and be anywhere. If that was one of his sneakers in the tree by where Jack wound up his body could be anywhere. Also, weren't there seats with bodies still sitting in them in a pond under a waterfall? So, trajectory can put him anywhere.
Is the clip you're talking about the first part of the Orchid video? When the bunny "fell" into the room? Marvin didn't create a duplicate. It's just that the bunny came back from its little spacetime dimension journey too quickly. They couldn't be near each other because matter + anti-matter = boom + poof!!!

OMG, I've forgotten the whole thing with Jin. Everytime I see him go after Micheal I can't seem to think "What an ass!" It's not until later in the show that you find out what the fuss is all about. And what a shock... Sun can speak English.
I probably missed a lot of information with season 1, since it mostly covers a lot of back-story and the relationships between the characters now that they are on the island.
I watched this episode twice now, and I cannot seem to find very many items that wasn't already discussed before. Hmm.... maybe someone else is better at picking up things than I am.

I've started to rewatch the first season just this week--had to rent it so finally got around to it and thanks. boutte, what a good idea!! There is so much more to catch when you watch it again. It's especially helpful after being on the forum, reading and discussing everyone's ideas.
So now my husband and I are watching it because he wanted to know what the big deal is with this "crazyness over Lost?" His first comment was why is the camera showing one eye opening on some of the characters? IN THE LAND OF THE BLIND THE ONE-EYED MAN IS KING."(?) My thought was that Jack and Locke are both lying on their backs when they first show them. Did they have some brain trauma from that fall? Then they all apparently ate the wild boar that Locke killed. Would a Muslim have eaten wild boar? I DOUBT IT. Sayid doesn't seem to have hallucinations, does he? So then I saw this on the Revolution Health site:
Infection by common toxoplasma gondii parasite carried by cats and farm animals (and distant relatives of farm animals like the wild boar?) may increase a person's risk of schizophrenia a US study suggests. Those exposed to toxoplasma gondii had a 24% greater risk of developing schizophrenia!!
And this on paranoid schizophrenia:
"In some cases schizophrenia seems to appear suddenly..."
The first signs of paranoid schizophrenia usually surface between the ages of 15 and 34. In the DSM IV Paranoid schizophrenia is defined as "preoccupation with one or more systematized delusions or with frequent auditory hallucinations related to a single theme."
So my thought is this: Are some of these visions related to brain trauma or exposure to something toxic on the island--possibly the eating of parasitic- infected boar meat?
Here's a list of books they recommended in the article "Beyond a Beautiful Mind: Film choices for teaching about Schizophrenia." by Rohan Ganguli and Harold Pincus.
Clean, Shaven,,The sufferer's INTENSE AND UNFULFILLED LONGING FOR FAMILY and recovery. The best portrayal of untreated schizophrenia ever presented on film. (BEN, JOHN?)
Through The Glass Darkly, 1986 Ingmar Bergman ---Just discharged mental patient recuperates ON AN ISLAND RETREAT.
Shine-1996, Dr. Scott Hicks---BAD FATHER causes psychosis. JACK, JOHN, SUN, KATE, BEN, CHARLIE, SHANNON, AND ?
The Snake Pit --CHILDHOOD LOSS triggers psychosis-catatonia-person appears frozen. JOHN's melt down off the island and looking dead IN THE COFFIN?
Man Facing Southwest, 1986--Patient claims to be an alien. Film discusses line between sanity and insanity. (BEN? JACOB?
Other films about schizophrenia were Birdy, A Beautiful Mind, The Fisher King, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Spider, and They Might Be Giants.
Anyone interested in this idea? or have I been exposed to toxoplasma gondii? I think I see dead parasites.......

It's a well thought out theory but I think the visions are real. Just like Lock's paralasys being cured. Jack's vision of his father happened before the boar hunt. Some of the visions are shared which also makes it unlikely to be halucinations.
Of the films you listed the only one I remember is A Beautiful Mind. Great flick.
The voices in my head are telling me that I need to watch episode 6 today. Hopefully Locke, notsolost42, Delsanora and yourself will join in a discussion about it tonight.

I remember reading that book and getting goose bumps from it. It was a very disturbing but grabby story! This statement may make some people very mad at me, but I never eat pork or any kind of meat now since I read about ground up animal blood, bones, and parts being put in the feed of herbivores to increase their bulk and make them have more meat on their bones. The fact that cows/cattle who are obviously sick or lame and are called "downers" are put into the meat and meat products supply is criminal to me....! Why are they sick? Is it a brain disease? A very interesting and factual book to read is the "The Family Who Couldn't Sleep by a man with the last name of Max. He details the whole Prion disease history and makes a compelling argument about how Man's need to produce a better farm animal with more stamina and more meat potential unknowingly triggered the Mad Cow tragedy. One of the worst kinds of meat is the ground up hamburger you buy in the market because brain and spinal cord ( Possible Prion disease spreaders) can be ground up with the meat due to the way they use the air or stun guns to kill the animals.
It's definitely more than I ever wanted to know about what I enjoyed eating! The meat industry is a huge business. Remember how Oprah got in trouble with the beef industry? It was about exposing the little known practices of those who raise and kill animals to sell their meat and animal products! The USA has still got a long way to go because there are countries who have banned our meat from entering their markets! Why do you think that is? Once you get a prion disease like Creutzfeld Jakob disease, you will absolutely die--no cure-no hope.
There are some very good meat substitutes by Morningstar farms and other companies. I use the Morningstar Crumbles in place of the hamburger I used to use when making soup, spaghetti sauce, and all. I will get down from my soapbox now, but I hope you will read that book--and anyone raising their precious children might want to explore the subject. I believe very strongly in the truth of what I am saying here. My daughter in laws death from something unknown that resembled CJD has made me do months of research on this subject. It could change your life! And thanks for your comments, Bunny, I didn't mean to gross you out!

Getting back to the rewatch---Episode 6. I think I understand so much more about Jin's reaction to Michael having the gold watch now. Jin's father suggested to him to make the delivery of the watches Jin's LAST job for Mr. Paik. With Michael finding and wearing the watch, it was symbolic of Jin's not being able to complete the one last task that would free him forever from having to do Mr. Paik's dirty work! Any man standing in Jin's way of being with Sun and getting away from Paik would have to pay the price!!! If he didn't have the other watches, then he knew he wasn't able to get the final job done and would somehow be drawn back into the vortex of evil. He had other watches to deliver in L.A., did he have them too, or were they lost in the crash? That was unclear to me. What struck me, also was that Jin's character was so violent then compared to what it is in later season episodes.
It makes me appreciate what being on the island has done for him character-wise. I did not like that violent, proud, and disturbed Jin. Also, he was very hurt by Sun's secretly knowing English! The way she exposed the truth in front of everyone openly revealed that she had kept it from her own husband. "Saving face" is a very important issue in human cultures. Sun realized that her secrets were as distasteful to Jin as Jin's work for her father was to her. That's payback, I guess. Haven't we all been there?:o
