Alvar is of Old English origin, and its meaning is "elf or supernatural army, warrior".
Despite Hanso not being immediately recognizable as a Danish name, by substituting the "O" with the, uniquely Danish "Ø", changes the name to Hansø, this actually means "His Island" in Danish, as the letter "ø" means island. The Danish "Ø" is the equivalent of the Swedish "Ö", which is also the Swedish word for island. Hence, "Hans ö" would mean "His island" in Swedish as well.
