Through a parallel universe they came back. There was an older 2nd Jack that was in that coffin. That's why Jack said he was neither friend or family of the deceased. That is also why Kate wouldn't want to go to the funeral. I believe that the people who survived the flight cannot die, and that's why Jack wants to go back. Crazy I know, but it's just a theory.

I can't see why it would be jack. He brought the paper to cate from the obituary section of whatever, she said "why would I go?" Then when he was at the viewing he said it was neither friend or family, I just can't picture who it would be. At first I would Imagine Sawyer, but with the size of that coffin, I can't picture it. Plus if it were walt why wouldn't his father or family be there .But then when the guy said he had no family I thought Loocke but the coffin is still too small. I don't know, who do u guys think it was?

It is Ben. Ben is not very large in stature so he would fit.
Jack says neither friend nor family, he spends his weekends trying to get back to the island.
Prior to the phone call, Ben asked Jack something like why do you want to go back? What do you have there? These words are ringing very loudly and true to Jack who is obsessed with returning.
It makes sense that Kate would ask her question too. "Why would I go?"
Why would no one show up at Ben's funeral? His leadership was being severely questioned by the Others. They may have forced Ben to return when the survivors were rescued.
Ben was loosing his grasp of his leadership role, especially since Locke heard Jacob say, "help me."
The Others made Ben leave. Locke was invited to stay. Ben died alone and without a family.

I like the parallel universe theory as well. It certainly would explain a lot of things like tropical polar bears and killer smoke monsters.:)

First of all if people who survived the flight cannot die then what about all of the crash survivors that did die, like Charlie, Boone, Shannon, Anna Lucia, Scott, Eko, etc?
Let's say only the survivors who escape the island cannot die? Then why would Jack be trying to jump off the bridge and kill himself?
Also...there did not seem to be any reaction to Jack from the funeral director when he came into the funeral home. I would expect the he would have some sort of reaction to Jack if he had arranged his body double in a coffin for a funeral.

How else did the others know the preoccupations, family members, history.... of the survivors. If it wasn't for a parallel story liine,... they wouldn't!

That funeral director would have seen the body. Had it been jack he would have had a strong reaction when he saw a live Jack walk in!!!
And he offered to open the casket so I don't think the corpse was unrecognizably disfigured.
Maybe someone loses their legs. If that happens to someon it should be a dead give away. Of who is in the coffin. Dead.

I don't think Jack is in the coffin...the operator of the funeral home asks Jack if he wants him to open the coffin. This guy would know who was in the coffin. The funeral home operator would have freaked OUT to see a guy who looks just like the guy tucked away in the coffin.

Great minds think alike. Maybe we should volunteer for a parapshychology study. I say that cuz I understand it comes up in future episodes. And it was like we were hinking the same thing. Ohh that is spooky and mysterious.

Never thought of that, but there is definetly a theme of time travel; between the flash backs to flash fowards, the whole electromagnetic issue, and Charlie's return in Hurley's vision. Unless the guy that said "Hey that guys staring at you" is another imaginary friend, SOMEONE else saw Charlie. Yeah he's dead, but is it some kind of weird time travel that brought him to Hurley? who knows, maybe Jack is in the coffin. My money's on Ben...somehow someway

Maybe we dont know the person in the casket yet......a character who is yet to be introduced but clearly played an important role with the main charcters.

Actually it wasn't a TINY coffin... I saw a post on this a while ago and someone (probably was some kind of math nerd) compared things next to the coffin, compared jack next to the coffin, etc and did like mathematical equations and stuff and it ended up being a regular sized coffin.
There has been speculation that the person in the coffins name starts with "J" that was from the Obit. so that leaves Jin,James,Juliet,Jacob, but 3 new male characters are being introduced according to TV guide there names are "Miles","Lapidus",And"Faraday" these all seem like last names except Miles which could go either way. My theory is maybe Jack became close to one of the so called rescuers who were not supposed to actually rescue them but did. one of their names could start with J we will have to see

I totally agree with this therory! I swear I was just thinking this. People ask what about all the others who died? Who said they died? I don't think Charlie is dead in the future off island world either because crazy guy saw him before Hurley did.
I think Jack is in the coffin too. Kate said why would I go to the funeral, she meant you and I know we're not dead...why would I go to that.

Good point. I think it is Sawyer. Sawyer probably continued with his life the same way as he was off of the island and conned Kate. Jack, Hurley, and Kate all continued with there miserable lives the same way they did before they were on the island. Jack felt guilt for leaving the others behind and the loss of his father. He became a drunk and drug addict, Kate obiously was still a fugitive because they met a secret place near the airport so even if she wanted to go to the funeral she couldn't because the feds would have been there, and Hurley ended up back at the mental institution. If you remember in Sawyer's flashback he gave not only the money he was trying to con from the woman and her family but also gave them the $160,000.00 that was lent to him from gangster. The gangster said he better have the $160,000.00 and an extra 50%. That guy came back and killed him.

That is a great theory! But, I also agree with Gambo....so many theories..UGH!!!! This is why I love the show!

I think whoever is in the coffin is part of the Oceanic six. Like Jack and Hurley, this person is driven mad by leaving the island, but instead of going to a mental institution or becoming an addict, he decides to end his own life.
