In the last episode, did anyone else notice that when the underwater search team was looking around and found the plane, that they showed the COCKPIT of the plane underwater? Remember back in the beginning, that the cockpit of the plane was found in the woods? The pilot was still alive, but was ripped out by some 'creature' through the windshield.. so how was the front of the same plane on the bottom of the ocean?

I agree. I remembered the same thing. Which would explain the cover up theory....For some reason, they (the government somehow involved in this coverup?)....they don't want anyone to find the real Flight 815 or any of their passengers that survived. There is definitely a bigger picture there!
Maybe the pilot goes to the island (not only out of guilt because HE was supposed to be flying 815 but maybe he also stumbles on to something and goes there to investigate it)...
Maybe they said "they need you" because someone was trying to prove that they DID survive it....

I thought the plane was a plant and that Frank knew the real pilot, and the underwater one was not the same guy.

The wreck was found in a trench off of Java. That makes no sense at all if the flight was from Sydney to LA. The route would have gone over Fiji not Indonesia. Even if the island was disrupting the navigation system, causing the plane to be off course by hundreds of miles it seems that ground based radar on Java would have picked up the plane and been trying to contact them.
The water in the deep ocean trenches is very VERY cold and that would inhibit some deterioration of the bodies, but when a plane falls out of the sky they don't generally stay in one or two pieces and the bodies are strewn everywhere. Even if by some miracle the plane stayed together when it hit the water the pressure would do damage as it sank.
Another problem with staging the crash is that military satellites would spot something like this being done because hauling a wide-bodied airplane and an ocean going crane about is not something you can hide under a canvas tarp. Further,Australian or Indonesian Coast Guard or Navy patrols might spot the vessels trying to set up the crash sight because this part of the ocean is notorious for pirates and there is a lot of merchant traffic in the area (oil tankers, container ships, etc.).
I think it is flight 815. And I think that 815 also crashed on the island. It's an anomaly and ties into all the time/space theories that have been bouncing around from day one.
But I could be wrong... I frequently am

Notice that the plane in the trench is actually broken into three pieces (cockpit, fuselage and tail). The island plane broke into three sections: the cockpit in the jungle, the fuselage on the beach, and the tail section just off the beack on the other side of the island.

I never believed the plane being a plant...I agree with Glenn they are both flight 815. Did they ever say the guy in season 1 was the actual pilot...maybe he was the co-pilot...i have to watch it again
